There are several software apps that may help you change the password without tearing the comp apart.
try CmosPwd    at this link: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/CmosPwd
or IBios located at this site>  http://www.11a.nu/software/bios-pc-bios-security-and-maintanance-toolkit/  download the DOS version .

The Cmos battery on Compaq NX series is at the back side of the motherboard, so that you have to disassemble the laptop completely to lift the motherboard and remove the battery.

the rtc battery is on the motherboard.i doubt its the problem. If you have a voltmeter check your charger to make sure it is working. then make sure battery is charged with the voltmeter. try and run the system without the battery in, just using the ac adapter. if it works with the ac adapter and not the battery your battery probably needs to replaced as its been charged and discharged too many times. you might want to just reload the os. the link i gave gives disassembly to all toshiba laptops. the rtc battery on the motherboard looks like a watch battery. it should be good for 5 years or more. your laptop battery will go long before the rtc battery.
well, if the clock is still losing time, i would go ahead and replace the rtc battery as it is cheap, if you can do the repair yourself. typically when the clock loses time it is the rtc battery, but might be the clock chip, both are cheap and cheap to replace.
I would not replace the motherboard, not that , that is that difficult, but new lap tops are so cheap these days. i would go through the laptop manual, it should have where the rtc is located on the motherboard. the manuals are typically on line at toshiba. if you cant find the location, i would contact toshiba or post that question on their board. alternatively you could take it into a best buy or circuit city and they might charge you $50 to $80 to look at the computer, then you can determine if you want to have it repaired as they will diagnose the problem. if it is the rtc clock battery they can tell quickly from a voltmeter and the mother board schematic and manual. so you might get your lap topped fixed for under 100.00. toshiba should have a list of authorized repairers so you can call and find who can give you the best deal. the rtc will be near the processor and the batter will look like a round, flat watch battery. so you can pull it out, and in general just find the same voltage and size and replace the battery. i dont have anymore time to help you.

good luck

HI,

Unfortunately it is not easy to replace the RTC (CMOS) battery in a Toshiba Tecra 9100 laptop. In order to replace the battery you will have to take it apart and remove the top cover assembly. The RTC battery is connected to the power board. It’s really hard to see the battery on this photo, but it’s there. You can find a new RTC battery for this model if you search on the Internet by the following part number:

The Battery is located on the motherboard..

  • Anonymous Jan 30, 2009

You have to open your notebook and change the
battery on the mainboard. I think it's a normal battery like on a
    desktop PC's mainboard.

Forgot my power on password

Remove the battery and to the power cord.
Remove the two screws that secure the keyboard. After removing the keyboard, remove the battery “RTC” to stop providing energy to epprom BIOS. After the upgrade or downgrade, or any repair, leave the Laptop for 5 minutes, without any source of energy.
Then connect only the power cord without battery and without the battery “RTC” of the Bios.
then turn on the pc without the battery and press f10 change the admin password put the battery of the laptop again not the rtc battery then save changes and exit, reeboot with the win xp disk inside , change boot order and done i garantied it work install xp and then connect the rtc battery done. jajaja easy

Power On password has been enabled on the notebook

The power on password is configured from the BIOS and removing the BIOS battery will not reset the BIOS and remove the password as it is stored on an EEPROM chip.
This password is to protect unauthorized access to data on the laptop and the hard drive. There are no backdoor passwords available.
Ask the person who set the password, then you will be able to remove it by going into the BIOS setup.

Forgot BIOS password.

1.) Unplug AC, take out the main battery.

2.) Take out /disconnect the RTC (real time clock) battery for app. half an hour (the period of 5 min as specified in the MSG normally is not long enough).

3.) Plug in the AC adapter (batteries still removed); computer should boot automatically, if not use the power button.

4.) The machine will boot and show the 162-error-msg "system options not set". Use F1 to save the settings.

5.) Shut down the computer and disconnect AC power again.
6.) Re-connect the RTC-battery.
7.) Install the battery pack(s).
8.) Restart the computer.

Caveat: All settings are set back to factory standard.
You'll have to enter a correct date/time and change the settings to your needs.

Note: pls strictly keep to the sequence.
Re-starting with the main battery and or RTC-battery inserted will spoil the job.

Bios/startup password

yes, it will still be charged, to reset the bios password you need to locate the cmos battery on the motherboard and remove it for 10 mins or so, but where exactly the battery is situated, i'm not sure.
