I was watching the TV and it turned off by itself. Now, when I try to turn it on (either with remote or with switch on TV), nothing happens. The "on" light doesn't come either. When I try to turn it on, the lights in the living room dim slightly, so I know that it's getting power. Does anyone know what is wrong? This TV is about 12 years old, but I've never had a problem out of it.
It could be your starting cap has a short and insead of building a charge to get the transfomer ot kick ,It may be just drawing more and mor juice with out the discharge ,I wouldn't recommend doing that any more that amount of stored charge may arc to somthing that may start a fire.If you still want to play with the starter, make sure your breaker works or you may burn somthing up outside the tv.Get and Ohm meter and find out if the cap is is shorted out ,ther pretty cheap but I hope you didnt burn up anything like power transitors or the entire transformer, you should make sur they are not shoted before you start bying the starter cap.If you smelt burning wire in the past while trying to start a nice used Tv May be a your best bet ,projections tvs are being replace by lcd even if their real new ,people with $ want to go in the Hole for more space in theit living room

I have the same exact problem. The green Light comes on and I hear the familiar click sound when you turn the TV on, however it turns off immediately. Maybe it overheard me talking about getting a new one. Mine was manufactured in April 1999.
