If your batteries are fully charged and making good contact than the unit will require service.

Why did it shut off and begin beeping?

These beeps are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of beeps occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called beeping codes. Make sure about the exact number of beeps. , by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. 5500 hp monitor

Not sure how it could do it when the electricty is shut off unless it has a battery inside, and I couldn't imagine why it would. If the power cord is plugged in then the unit has power whether it's turned off or not. Then it could beep - that I could understand. I would contact HP support on this one! http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html?pageDisplay=support

Beep

The Polaroid Fun! Digital 320 camera is programmed to shut off automatically after a few minutes if it is not being used. This helps to conserve battery power. When the camera shuts itself off, it will make a continual beeping sound. To use the camera after it has shut off, simply push the shutter button or self-timer button to take a picture. If you are not going to use your camera, turn the power switch to OFF. The camera will also beep in rapid sequence after you press the self-timer button. The camera will continue to beep in faster sequence until a picture is taken (approximately 10 seconds). A final long beep signals that a picture has been taken. NOTE: It is normal for the camera to beep while downloading photos to a computer.
