Smelly water when i run the water in my machine, it smells bad like sewage. i thought it was our water, but upon checking, it was not. we assume it must be something in the washing machine itself but we have no idea where to begin.

? How about Filling the machine with a suitable detergent bleach solution leave a couple of hours then pump out. Also this is likely to be a grease/soap crud build up in the pump and drain system So attention to the drain hose, Detach and seal one end and fill with hot detergent and leave then remove the plug to allow to drain. It is the drain area most likely the cause.

how is the machine drain connected to the drainage system?
If it is 'hard plumbed' in then it is possible it is sewage gases permeating back up.
In the UK at any rate Washing machines are not hard plumbed in they either empty directly to an external gully with a break in the pipe or the are plumbed in the the kitchen sink out let above the U trap. and the kitchen sink goes into an external gully so there is a broken line or a water trap between the machine out let and the main drainage system.

i had what sounds like a similar problem. i complained of our laundry smelling sour then finally like sour sewage and a flooded laundry room. i was told that when its not draining properly, it can create a siphon-effect and actually pull the dirty water back out of the drain lines-yuk! i hope this isnt true.
there was a baby sock stuck in the pump preventing it from draining properly. hope your problem can be remedied as easily.
as for the smelly clothes, i always add 1/2 cup white vinegar to each load. it does wonders for odors.

Unfortunately this is a common issue with low water consumption front loading washers.

Kenmore front load HE washer odor

How old is your machine? Mine is 5 years old, and I just started to get a "sewage" smell in my laundry room this weekend. I disconnected the water return to the sewer line and discovered lots of gunk in the hose, and the connector to the machine was completely dark green. I'm going to replace the hose, and trying to figure out if there is some sort of filter.

We only use He detergents too, so I guess this is something that just happens over time.
