Restting the phone handset number

I recently retired one of my handsets, handset number 2, and would like to rest the numbers so that they are now 1, 2 and three. I can't seem to make it happen. I tried re-registering the phones but the numbers do not change. They remain 1,3 and 4. Can you help?

I would suspect that you need to de-register both 3 and 4 at the same time before re-registering them. This probably will not work if the base unit still thinks phone number 2 is out there somewhere. It would need to be de-registered as well for the others to move up a notch. I did read the process for de-registering somewhere on the web, don't remember where, just that it involves removing/installing the battery and punching some buttons.
