MXL 603 pair, one has a 60 cycle hum when in a certain room in house.

I am having trouble with one of my pair of MXL 603 microphones that I bought recently. It makes a 60 cycle humming noise when I am in a certain room in my house, but not in any rooms upstairs (I haven't tried any other rooms downstairs). I switched the microphones so they used different cables, but It's not the cable's problem, since the hum still came from the same mic. When I move it away from the wall, It reduces, so that if i'm in the center of the room it's half way gone. If it's in the center of the room, and I put my hand in front of it, the hum goes away, but If it's near the wall (where I want it to be positioned around my piano), I have to physically touch the microphone for the humming to stop. It's only with that one though, and not with the other one, and they both came together. I turned off the wifi, turned off the power in that room, and turned off a ipod speaker system in the room as well, but nothing has worked....

SOURCE: Hum from speakers

I suspect an open ground or bad cnnection in your hdmi cable to the amp from the sat.A hum is very indicative of that situation

You will need to run the mic through a mixer that has phantom power. Without the phantom power supply, the microphones active circuitry will not be able to work.. Good luck, any problems getting your rig up just ask. A "FixYa" rating for assistance would be great, thanks

SOURCE: Bose Wave radio humming noise

Actually the problem was caused by a bad 470uf cap, that was used to filter the powersupply for all the analog amps. Replaced the cap the unit works like new.

SOURCE: Problems with my MXL 990 (radio)

g'day mate.
The problem you have will relate to the big antennas in your area. Most radio stations pump more than 100,000 watts these days. So it really comes down to the shielding and what's called Radio Frequency Interference rejection of your microphones to keep this out. I would STRONGLY urge you to take the mics back and get a refund,or change them over for something else. They are VERY cheap, there is no real solution to your problem, except for better design... means spend more mullah. If you are looking for a decent low cost condenser mic, I recommend an AKG Perception. I have used AKG for years, and this mic is a great sounding low cost unit.

Hope this helps you. Nothing can be done to improve what you have, they are a cheapo item. Good Luck

This mic is sensitive. I have moved in a closet in my house. How do you deal with this mic when it still picks up so much air. What can I do?

Your mic may be sensitive but its gain is set in the mixer or computer to which it's connected. I don't know what you mean by "too much air" but if you mean "room sound" there shouldn't be much in a closet unless it has all hard sound reflecting walls. You will need to provide a better description of the problem.

Is the 990 an externally polarized capsule or electret?

The MXL 990 is an externally polarized condenser microphone. You will nee to provide 48v Phantom power to use it. Alternatively there is a USB version, the MXL 990 USB which gets it['s power from the USB port.

My brand new MXL Studio 1 USB microphone will not work in my Macbook. In System Preferences, under sound, the microphone does not show up.

There is a known problem with the signal ground of the usb chip on some computers. To resolve this error a hardware modification (additional GND connection) must be carried out inside the microphone. This should be done by qualified MXL service personel only.

I bought a MXL 990 USB, and I cannot connect it to my PC. I followed all the instructions, but couldn't get a sound from it. Can somebody help me? I have Windows Vista

Make sure you've switched your sound input from the default (internal mic/input) to the MXL 990. This should be somewhere in the sound options.

If you're sure it's not getting power, you need to send it back.

Pls help

The MXL 990s requires 48 volts to operate. If your mixer does not have a phantom power option, you will need to purchase a microphone pre-amplifier with phantom power to interface the microphone to your mixer.

Problems with my MXL 990

Sounds like the frame of the microphone itself has become ungrounded. You could try VERY
carefully disassemble the mic and check for a bad ground or a bad wire connecting to the mic
body.
