Lately my Iway 500C has been acting flaky - on occasion the map view mode button (which selects between north-up, track-up, and 3D modes) remains blue and the touchscreen won't respond to anything else for a time - as if it thinks I'm touching (and holding) that area of the screen.
I've tried recalibrating the touchscreen but still have the problem.
On a related note, I have to recalibrate the screen fairly often to keep the touch screen remotely accurate. When it gets bad enough for example, it's tough even to clear the power-up nag screen.
Anyone else seeing these types of problems with the Iway?
Yes! I have an iWay 500C and all of a sudden, it started having serious calibration issues. I try to press a button on it and it thinks I'm pressing something about 2 inches below where I really am.
I can't even get to the option to re-calibrate it when it does this, since the recalibration menu option is near the top of the display!
I still have to experiment more, but the last time it did this, I think I had success by powering the unit on, waiting for it to finish getting a "fix" on the location (so the processor in it wasn't so busy), and then drawing a few big circles around the display with my finger. After that, it seemed to "snap into calibration" again.

Assuming you are interested in the latest Map update, try contacting Panapacific, Although I have not purchased this product, they say they have the iWAY500c and iWAY600c Navteq Map Update Q1-10 v1.7 listed as Part Number: PACCARQ110
Although listed on their website, the product is currently unavailable for purchase online. Contact their customer service department at 1-800-726-2636.
I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AFTER I DOWNLOADED THE LATEST UPDATE. I RELOADED IT AND NOW IT SEEMS TO WORK OK. GO TO THE LOWRANCE WEB SITE AND THEN TO DOWNLOADS. LOOK FOR THE UPDATE FOR YOUR GPS AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. GOODLUCK
Are you referring to the maps and points of interest database?
If so, the short answer is NO. By contacting the company that developed this product; I learned recently they have no plans to update the maps in the foreseeable future.
CONNECT IWAY 500C TO YOUR COMPUTER USB PORT, WHEN YOU SEE YOUR IWAY HARD DRIVE IN YOUR FILE MANAGER, DO A DRIVE FIX AND THEN DEFRAG. ON THE IWAY HARDDRIVE.
THAT WORKED FOR ME WITH SAME PROBLEM.
Unfortunately, the 500c is obsolete now and Lorance cannot repair the LCD screens anymore. Your only option may be to call Lowrance at (800) 324-1356 ad try to get an uprade to the newer iWay 600c. It's far from free, but less than you could buy a new unit for.
Sometimes these will go into demo mode for no apparent reason. You can access the diagnostics screen by holding the map/music button while powering up. Be careful which buttons you press in this mode - select only the on-screen buttons, not the hard-buttons as they adjust brightness and contrast. Select the correct operating mode and power the unit off, then on.
I have the same problem, it started after updating. Spoke with Lowrance tech and said it is a hard drive problem. I had to purchase a 600 for $250 because they gave me a discount for having paid for the update and the unit is malfunctioning. They refused to consider that it may be a software problem. The screen loses calibration and the unit goes balistic with the orientation. Have had the unit for 4 years with no problem until updates were installed
I have the same problem essentially. The only thing I can do is pan left and right in map mode. I can't access any of the buttons that appear onscreen as the touch screens calibration (or something) seems wacked out. The only time the unit functions even remotely normal is if its *VERY* hot. Almost too hot to touch. Anyone have a solution?
My iway 500c kinda had the same problem. At first while driving, the screen would go from 3d to always north to always up and be switching screens 3 to 4 times a second. It would finally go back to normal. After about a month of this the touch screen would work intermittently. It finally quit working completely on a trip to Texas. When I got home I called Lowrance and the said they would replace it for $350. I already spent over $600 for it. I took the thing apart and found the grounding screw to the touch screen was really loose. I tightened it and now its working again for now. I am not happy with Lowrance support.
