The TV just went black in the middle of watching it last night. No popping sound just black. It turns on but no sound or picture. I have tried unplugging it all night and holding the power button for a minute to reset it but no luck. Any help would be appreciated!
There could be a few things that would cause this. I would suspect that you have a problem with either the power supply board or the main board. Based on my experience, the main boards go before the power supplies. What is the model #
the model number is E550va.
Do you know where a good place online to order the main board would be?
Those main boards are hard to find, that's usually not a good sign. There are two different main boards that were used in that model. You will need to find out which one you have. You can do this by taking off the back cover and looking at the part # on the main board, or by calling Vizio and provide them the serial # to your set. They can tell you which board you have by looking at your serial #. So far I have only found one main board, and it's $148. Before you order the main board, you will need to verify that the power supply is on good working order. You can do this by getting a hold of a multimeter.
If you power supply checks out ok, before you buy a main board, make sure the seller has a reasonable return policy as well as some type of warranty
awesome thank you sooooo much!

SOURCE: VIZIO TV Black screen. Cannot turn off TV without unplugging.
I had a similar problem after having a Vizio for 2 and a half years. I
left the room for a minute, i came back and the screen went black. I didnt hear an arcing sound though.
There was still power to the unit and you could see that the back light
was working, just no picture, no sound, and you couldn't use any of the
buttons. The only way to turn it off was to unplug it. It would then
start up, with the Vizio logo going from orange to white, and then do
the same thing all over, no pic or sound. I would check the ceramic fuse first on the board that gets power from the plug.
HOW I FIXED MINE: I ordered a new "main PCB" from tigerdirectparts.com
(you can also use searspartsdirect.com). This is the circuit board with
all of the inputs on it (hdmi, cable, etc.) I opened it up,
disconnected the old one, put in a new one and now it works fine.I used
both serial numbers on the board to search for it online. It cost me
$144 to do it, but that's better than $450 for a new TV. My tv is the
vx32l hdtv10a. I hope that helps.

It's either the backlight lamp or backlight inverter is busted
due to a power failure or fluctuation. Here's how to determine which is which:
SOURCE: no picture or sound, light comes on in the front and have to unplug tv to turn it off.
I had this exact problem on my Vizio 47" HDTV. I removed the speakers and all the screws on the back cover. Took the cover off and located the fuses on the largest circuit board. The are in the upper right hand corner of the board. There are 3 of them in a row labeled LF 1.5, LF 3.0 and LF 3.0. The are white in color with copper ends. I took a volt meter and measured continuity across all fuses individually and found the LF 1.5 to be blown. The guy at the electronics store sold me a barrel 1.5A fuse and told me to soldier it across the top of the blown fuse. It took an extra set of hands but the TV works perfectly.

For the cheap guy like me who will probably do more harm than good:
Also check for the F3 Fuse on that same main input board. It is located in the upper right corner. Hard wired fuses; very small. You will see F1-F4 (F4 is empty). You can solder a replacement fuse right over it. I would recommend piggybacking the fuse with a fuse you can replace. Will need the holder and a new fuse. 6 bucks.
Doesn't solve problem, but I can go another 2 1/2 years and the wife won't blame me for screwing up the TV in the first place.
