I have a Sony DCR-TRV460 Digital8 camcorder that appears to record and play back digital tapes fine.
BUT, in attempting to play back my old Hi8 tapes to record to DVD...the bottom 1/8th of the screen is choppy and there is NO SOUND. I checked multiple Hi8 tapes and they all play back the same way.
I noticed on one tape when the "tracking" appeared to be better, then there was intermittent sound.
Any recommendations? Thanks in advance....allen
RECIEVED THIS RECORDER YESTERDAY FROM AMAZON, AND IT ACTS LIKE IT WILL WORK. BATTERIES GOOD AND THE TAPE TURNS INSIDE, BUT IT WON'T RECORD ANY SOUND OR PLAY IT BACK. THERE IS SOME NOISE LIKE IT'S ON, BUT JUST A BLANK TAPE NOISE. HAVE ALSO TRIED MULTIPLE TAPES IN CASE THERE WAS A BAD TAPE.RECIEVED THIS RECORDER YESTERDAY FROM AMAZON, AND IT ACTS LIKE IT WILL WORK. Hi all,
I found out that I had purchased an extended warranty with the camcorder (will expire in Feb 2008). So Best Buy fixed this under warranty.
The repair sheet came back saying they had to replace an analog chip / analog PCB.
I've transferred nearly 25 tapes to DVD since then, and they all play back with sound.
Thanks again for the tips!

Re: Hi8 playback problem
I don't think theris anything wrong with your recorder, It happens because the tracking info of your old tapes is not the same as your new one. You can view anythingyou record even in old tapes, but u can't playback another recording. so if u want to tape the old recording then u have re-adjust the tape guides while playing an old tape until u can get a clear picture. The adjustments are minor. DO NOT TURN THE GUIDES TOO MUCH. Remember to mark the initial setting
cheers
Your guides have come loose , probably - the
digital sound will be next to go because the
bottom edge of your tapes are being folded -
open the cassette tape lid by pressing the
small pin near one hinge and gently lifting
the door - if there are any creases ? get the
guides aligned ! to protect your library ;
( if there are no creases , try a sony
d8 cleaning tape - once ! before getting a
repair quote ) ;

The Sony DCR-TRV130 is a D8 digital camcorder which is not compatible with Hi8 camcorders.
You need to have an Hi8 camcorder or DCR-TRV103 or similar camcorders that backward compatible with Hi8 camcorders.
DCR-TRV250E is a PAL version camera of the Digital8 format.
Yes you can use Hi8/Digital8 NTSC tapes. The camera will record a PAL digital picture on the tapes which means that you can play back the tapes in PAL and therefore you will be able to playback recorded tapes on UK televisions because they are also of the PAL format.
Follow this procedure to troubleshoot if a blue screen is displayed when attempting to playback video from the camcorder.
Stop the tape.
Ensure the tape has been rewound to the beginning of the video recording.
Play the tape.
If the issue is not resolved, stop the tape and remove it from the camcorder.
Clean the video heads of the camcorder using a dry head cleaning cassette.IMPORTANT: Follow the instructions for use provided with the head cleaning cassette. It may be necessary to use the head cleaning cassette more than once per session.
Reinsert the tape into the camcorder.
Play the tape.
If the issue is not resolved, stop the tape and remove it from the camcorder.
Insert a different tape with video footage into the camcorder.
Ensure the tape has been rewound to the beginning of the video recording.
DCR TRV140E is a Digital8 camera
CCD TRV87E is a Hi8 camera,
(Hi8 is an analog format)
the tapes are the same size, wont help, the recording systems are not compatible
send them to a lab service ?maybe if there are only a few
or ebay a Hi8 camera and transcode them yourself
its not a solution, at least it clarifies the problem
I believe all Sony model DCR-TRV2XX and 3XX would play Hi 8 and ST8
Such as DCR-TRV265, DCR-TRV285 DCR-TRV340, DCR-TRV355
I hope that give you some ideas
I too was having a problem playing back my 8mm in my TRV460. The audio and video was both very glitchy. I tried what dyz66 said and rewound to the start of the tape, and then recorded about 10 seconds of meaninless video. After that the whole tape played nice and clear. Thanks for the idea. I believe from here on out I'm going to buy some new tapes to try and avoid this.
mechanical alignment! try to record for a minute and playback the result on another player/recorder, not on your camera, if the playback is not okay then your camera needs alignment, you need pro fix. You said that you've done manual cleaning already, maybe you dis aligned the mechanical parts accidentally, applying too much force on the mechanical parts of your small unit tends to bend, dislocate or move these parts out of alignment. defective videohead will never playback good video, and you said that it seems to correct only a few minutes of playback.
