Ok. So I exagerated a tad. But I just had a Durabrand DVD 1002 make a loud pop and smoke started rolling out of it. I get on this site and immediately see that someone else has has the same problem. Is there something like a product recall going on with these? To me it llooks like this might be a dangerously defective product. And I've only had the stupid thing for two months. Needless to say, I'm not exactly impressed.
Loud pop and smoke is what happens when capacitor blow off. These things happen. It doesn't mean product is dangerously defective. Faulty capacitor, or circuit board, or a power surge can cause this. If it's two months old, it's probably under manufacturer warranty, and you'd be able to get it fixed without any extra cost. Good luck.

Throw it away an buy a new one. WalMart's dvd's and all their electronics stuff are produced in china without any quality control and from the cheapest components. They aren't even worth repair. Buy a branded DVD (SAMSUNG, Sony) to avoid future problems.
