Went to use remote last night and all I got was DVD1 showing on the DVD recorder when enevr I pressed a button.
Have changed the batteries, unlpugged the machine for a period of time, tried the child lock theory and all the things in the handbook but cannot move past DVD1 error when any button is pressed on the remote control.
My local shop is closed due to the floods-can anyone help me with the DVD recorder problem?

Indeed, I did the same thing.... I did find the answer in the manual! Here's a copy of it (pg 23):
Set the command mode for the remote so it matches the command mode for the recorder you set above. 1 Hold down ENTER 2 While holding down ENTER, enter the command mode code number using the number buttons. Command Mode Code number DVD1 number button 1 DVD2 number button 2 DVD3 number button 3 3 Hold down both the number buttons and ENTER at the same time for more than 3 seconds. 4 Let up, press RETURN, all done!
You could try Changing the Remote Control code for your DVD recorder. If you have more than one Panasonic device, there's an option to give each device its own Remote Control code. The Default is DVD1. So for FixMick, it sounds like someone may have changed the Remote Control code on your machine to DVD3. For Dador, someone may have changed the Code to DVD1. So you'll need to change the Code on either the device or the Remote to make them match up (see page 19 of the DMR-EH65 Users Manual ... you can download it from the Panasonic website)
Sorry FixMick. I don't know why your display isn't working.
Slide the bottom part of the remote control down. Switch the bottom right button to DVD 1. There might be a white sticker that covers it so remove the sticker first. Then hold down the "Enter" button and the "1" button down at the same time for a few seconds. That should make the remote work again.
