Have a vizio 30"... its about a year and a half old.
Just today it starting acting up. after about 15 or 20 minutes of being on, the screen would just go black. The sound would remain on.
the unit is not hot or making any strange noises.
Have been told it could be my cable box (comcast), so I resent it as I was told.... Still happens.
Any suggestion ???
Don't want to just replace it without trying all options.
Thank you to all.
Well i have the same tv , and when i took it apart i switched a few wires around and i managed to get it working again, i can send some pictures of what i did because, i really had no clue what i exactly did by switching the wires.
Vizio service said problem was in inverter board and they had no replacement part. The did offer me a new 32" TV for $300. I took old TV apart and confirmed the inverter board (which drives the lamps) shut off after a few seconds despite the correct power coming from the power board.
To make sure it's the cable box, hook up a DVD player and see if the TV still blacks out. If the TV still blacks out, then TV is faulty.
When the TV has blacked out, can you still see outlines of the images. To see this, get really close to TV. If you press Menu, you will see the outline of the menus options box. If this is the case, Inverters are faulty.
Otherwise, Main board is the most likely culprit.

Re: Picture goes black, but audio stays on ????
Boards are also available from tigerdirect.com. The inverter board is over $300 and the power board about $105. The main board is over $400. I'm hoping my problem is a power board, or I'll get a new TV....

42" Vizio TV flickering strobing easy way to repair VW42L HDTV10A LCD TV ... EASY How to Fix Samsung LCD TV Flashing Flickering Screen!Missing: vp422hdtv10a snow
Sounds like you have a backlight problem. To verify this, turn on the set and dim the lights in the room. Take a bright flashlight and shine it on the screen. If you see a faint picture, you either have a back inverter or a bad backlight bulb.
You possibly have a failing hi-voltage module or fly-back transformer going bad. If it has a fly-back transformer, It's not worth the trouble. Some repair shops will sell you a module. Call a repair shop for help.
It sounds like you are saying the "video looks scrambled but the audio keeps playing OK"
Normally this is a Video Processor Problem that requires a Board to be replaced.
When the problem happens, can you see the TV menu or the TV's On Screen Display clearly.
I suggest checking to see if the problem happens with the video inputs like, Composite(yellow/red/black), component(RGB/yellow and black), HDMI and S-video. If it happens to all inputs then you need to replace a board.
Three guns Red Blue and Green in the picture tube of an old CRT set. If one of the guns goes out it effects that color. Sounds like one of the guns inside of the tube is going out, To costly to replace for such an old antilog set that will have to have a convertor box next month anyway.
Hello! I have a 32" Vizio LCD...within 30 minutes of the tv being turned on, black lines start running through the bottom half of the screen and eventually blacking out the bottom half of the tv screen. It also doesn't have anything to do with the ratio as I have tried that. HELP!
After being on a little while, the screen goes black (no audio as well) for 20 to 30 seconds. Green light stays on. Then, picture comes back on and takes a couple of seconds to get up to full brightness. About 5 seconds or so after the video comes back, the audio returns.
Until this morning, has only happened a couple of times a day, now happening more often. About 3 times in last 20 minutes.
