Suddenly a black box pops onto the lower portion of the screen. If you press the volume on the TV remote it goes away but will pop back on sometimes right away other times after a few minutes and sometimes, on a good night not at all. Also goes away if you go through the screen formats until you get back to standard.

You are going to have to have a Mitsubishi remote to do it--with that contact Mitsubishi and ask for the 4 digit code to enter to do the hard reset of the set--puts everything back to factory original when set was new.
Check the componet cables if you are using them for video from the cable box, the red may of came loose.Also you could have intermittent connection the video processor IC or as we techs call it the jungle IC. If it was the lamp there should be nothing. press the menu button if the menu does not come up the issue is with the tv. If the menu does come up try a second source a dvd player or game system. If the issue is only with the original source than the original source needs to be replaced.
First suggestion is to unplug your unit for 24 hours, if does not correct your concerns, you may have fluid leakage from the tubes onto the pc boards. Make sure you have proper air venting around the tv. If problem persist call factory authorized dealer in your area. good luck
if you have had the pillar box on for a long time and now you are viewing wide screen format the crt's have had more or the phosphorus worn on the 4x3 portion of the crt's witch will give you a different shade where the pillars were the only cure is to replace the crt's
