SOURCE: Compaq Presario R3000 Black Screen with flashing cursor
Lines are the BGA RAM Or VRAM Needing rework.. This will also cause boot issues on these models. Do you ever see the Compaq Logo? Weve repaired a ton of these and class settlement happened for the R3000's regarding the jacks but we could repair the other issue as well. (As well as install a new jack while its here).. HP's reimbursing for these outside repairs.
Good luck!

Is it a black screen right when you boot your computer? If so this could be a fatal disk error and the harddrive has crashed.
There is no easy fix other than to replace the harddrive.

Windows OS CD to install windows we were presented with the
following problems
A read disk
error occurred.Press CTRL+ALT+DEL To Restart
After quite a bit of experimenting with drive jumpers, unplugging
CMOS batteries, resetting the BIOS and attempts to build the drive on
other machines we surmised the drive was not the problem - it was
something Compaq related.
We knew the drive was OK because:
The resolution therefore had to be a compatibility issue. This
compatibility issue we never got the bottom of, however the solution we
were able to use was:
It would appear that this specific range of Compaq Evo N600 series
require the drive to have a specific format of boot sector that they
prefer to write themselves.
We did find a very good discussion thread on HP's business support
forums at http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?threadId=1049551&admit=-682735245+1184880661051+28353475 -
this is a long thread and has some false assertions in the upper posts,
however does resolve the issue in the end.
