You may have tried this already, but here is another possibility. If you have several drives, digital cameras, etc. that you connect to the computer your machine may be trying to use a drive letter that has already been assigned to another device.

Heres how to check:

right click on My Computer and select "Manage"
under "Storage" you will find "Disk Management"
Locate your mad dog Drive and right click
you want to "Change drive letter and paths"
select a new drive letter
close all windows
a reboot may be necessary

Give it a try and I hope this helps. I had a similar problem when I connected mine to my laptop.

I think ya have to make sure that you have the correct "Driver" installed. when ya plug it in.. it should make a noise and then ask for drivers OR install it's own.. also try another USB port.. and OR Uninstall the driver, Device Manager and reinstall again.

My Mad Dog external hard drive does not show up as a drive. How do I get this to show so I can access my information.

Connect it to a different computer, to see if the device is working at all.

If not, and if the Mad Dog is still under warranty, then exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

Otherwise, disassemble the casing, remove the disk-drive,
and connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the disk-drive is OK. This would imply that the USB-to-disk-drive interface inside the casing is the problem.

Usb not recognized and no removable disk drive

Try connecting the USB device to a different USB port on the same computer, or to a USB port on a different computer, to confirm that the USB device itself is working correctly.

Cannot get my computer to recognize a dvd burner I just installed

Make sure your jumper settings are correct. If it's your only drive, set it to "Master" if it's a second drive set it to "Slave"

First do windows update until everything is fully updated, pay careful attention to any hardware update that is needed in the left column and if that does not help go double click on MY COMPUTER select the drive( D) then right click, go to PROPERTIES then RECORDING set or change your defaults.
Hope this helps.

Mad Dog External DVD Writer

I don't know if I can be of any help here, but I purchased my Mad Dog Multimedia MEGASTOR DVD+/-RW burner a few years ago for my PoweSpec with XP Home Edition. I recently bought a new computer installed with Windows Vista Home Premium (which yes, I actually do love) and my external Mad Dog works perfectly, I didn't even have to update any drivers, it recognizes the drive everytime I plug it in (via USB). I don't need it anymore, but it's actually a better burner than the one that came with my system, which I bought new in March, although it's now discontinued. Do you have the disk for it? If so, have you tried running the disk again? What OS and processor do you have? In the event that it might be a matter of obtaining the proper driver for it to work for you, I also am a member of a great and extremely reliable site for free driver downloads. Free membership is limited to a few downloads within a certain period of time, and then you have to wait 24 hours, but other than that there is no limit so that's what I do. Just for the record, there was a period where my old XP was out of commission and I had to resort to my very old HP Pavillion that was about 10 years old, came with Windows 98SE(when that OS was brand new) and all I needed to do to make Win98 recognize the drive was download a driver and it worked just fine. LOL, that has a processor that runs at 600 megahertz, so you can imagine if my Mad Dog worked on systems like that, XP Home and now Vista Home Premium without a hitch, I was quite impressed with their products.

Mad Dog USB DVD-RW not recognized

The firmware updates and drivers won't help you. You can try turning it off, disconnecting it from your PC, then turning off your PC, turning on the burner and then turning your PC back on and hope that it's recognized. The chances are slim as this is a known issue with Mad Dog external USB DVDRW's and you need to send it in for repair if it's under warranty or put it on eBay as broken (or throw it out) otherwise and get a new one. I have a Mad Dog external DVD-RW and ran into the same exact issue, for a while it was working on and off as long as I didn't turn the burner off while my PC was on but for a while now it's just recognized by the PC as mass storage device rather than the DVDRW that it is and when you reach that point the aforementioned two choices (repair or throwing it out\putting it on ebay) are the only ones you have.

My external dvd burner is not showing up as a valid dvd drive

I don't think the burner is compatable with Mac. http://www.mdmm.com/products.php?categoryid=2 Here is the site. Check your model here. I only found Windows compatable. Good Luck, Tim p.s. someone out there must have some hacked driver.

Question about installing Roxio Creator 8.2 XE with Mad Dog drive I recently purchased an external Mad Dog MegaStor 18x Triple Format Drive with the software CD that contained Roxio Creator 8.2 XE. And I have some concerns about the installation. I have worked with computers for many years and I?m not a new when it comes to installing software. But this one was different. The only reason I say that is because my security/virus checking software was freaking out like never before. I am running Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 under Windows XP. The warning messages seemed unusual and excessive. It isn?t unusual for the security software to give me a heads-up when a program write to the registry. It is usually a blue-bordered pop-up window. But in addition to that, there were frequent "squeals" accompanied by red-bordered windows with ominous messages like: 1. Process is trying to install driver and gain full access to operating system. Security control will not be available anymore. 2. Process attempting to gain full access to the system by installing a driver. Writing system registry values from file C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\DLARTL_N.sys. 3. Process attempting to gain full access to the system by installing a driver. Writing system registry values from file C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\DRVNDDM.sys. 4. Suspicious driver installation, Running process (PID:2604): c:\Program Files\Roxio\DLA\dlauninw.exe 5. Running hidden installation into system: Program module installed and registering in registry key \REGISTRY\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run with value DLA without user interaction. This activity is similar to Trojan Downloader/Dropper. The warning that bothered me the most was the, "security control will not be available anymore." Excuse me? I?m installing multimedia software and I have to give up security control? I don?t get it. Of course I understand that I need to install drivers like I?ve done dozens of times but I?ve never seen messages like this before. Is this normal for this type of software?
