Noisy Washer I have a maytag performa washer (oversized capacity plus) that is about 4 or 5 years old. During the spin cycles it makes a loud whirling, whooshing noise and if I lift the lid the tank stops spinning immediately. There is no squeeling noise while the washer is spinning or when it stops. Most people either complain of noisy aggitating cycles or of squeeling noises... I have niether.

When I turn the dryer on, it makes a horrible rattling sound and the dryer barely turns. It sounds like loose rocks in the dryer. When I turn the dryer on, it makes a horrible rattling sound and the dryer barely turns. It sounds like loose rocks in the dryer.

I know the exact sound you are hearing, I had the same thing several yrs ago on my old Whirlpool. I think it was something with the transmission, but what I needed was no longer available. I found a lot of info by entering the make/model nr in search box at appliancepartspros.com. You could also look atR44U61 RepairClinic.com
It appears Maytag no longer produces the type of quality product we have purchased since 1970... we've owned three Maytag Washers - our last "performa" is a piece of ****!
It sounds like the belt broke or the lid switch could be bad. Use a screw driver to manipulate the switch with the machine on. If you can tip the thing back enough to check the belt. I hope this helps.
This washer is JUNK!!!!!! We have the same washer (2 1/2 years old) and same problem. Tried to replace the bearing myself, no luck. So I called a repair man to come out and look at it. As soon as i told him the model number, they would'nt even come out. Very common problem for this washer. We are on our way to Sears to purchase a Kenmore.....GOOD LUCK
Need to know a little more info. Need to know if this noise starts when you first turn it on (during the fill up cycle), once the actual washer starts (wash cycle) or when it goes into spin cycle.
How did that answer get an 83% rating? It is absolutely useless. My washer has the exact same problem as described above.During the spin cycle it sounds like a jet engine. It kinda sounds like the belt hitting the drive wheel but may be bearings in the motor.
remove the belt and spin the motor by hand to see if its noisy then the pump.if its the gearbox you would be better to replace the machine,i havent seen to many last more than 5 years the gear box could cost about 500.hope this helps.
