Just experienced this problem a few minutes ago right after I finished fixing my brothers HP DV6662se whose HDD just died. It was a bummer! good thing I found your solution. KUDOS to you man!
Gcmichaud: Take out the RAM and turn on the computer. It should freak out. If not, your motherboard has gone. The good news: your data is safe. If it does beep like crazy, turn the computer off, remove the battery AND ac, reinstall the RAM and hold the power button down continuously for a good, slow count of thirty. Plug in the AC and try again. Let me know if you have any other questions/problems. I'll monitor this thread.
jslo: It sounds like your power supply died. It's a pretty common problem. Can you get a friend to lend you their power supply? If so, hook it up and see if everything works. My bet is yes.

You can switch to an external monitor or data projector by two methods. 1. Connect the external monitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and the laptop. The video information will automatically switch to the external monitor. 2. If you power up the laptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor by pressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make and model laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCD screen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fn key plus one of the function key a few times. Here is a list of key combinations for some of the laptops :- IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7 HP and Compaq = Fn + F4 Toshiba = Fn + F5 Dell = Fn + F8

Hi,
Connect the monitor cable to the D-type connector on the laptop. Once the monitor is connected to the laptop. Hold down the Fn key on the keybaord and tap on the F8 key to toggle the display on the external monitor
There are three stages of the Fn+ F8 key
1, Exterenal only
2. Laptop + External screen
3. Laptop only.
Hi:
It sounds like the inverter or backlight has failed on your laptop. Try to connect an external monitor to the laptop to verify this. You should be able to toggle between the two displays by holding your function key down, then hitting the crt/LCD button. If the external monitor works good, then you have had a hardware failure.
Identify the VGA port on the laptop (check all sides) It'll look like this:
Connect your Monitor cable to this port and turn it on.
Now you need to switch your laptop display to the external monitor. Identify the Function key (F1 to F12) that has a monitor icon on it. Press Fn + that function key with the monitor icon. Wait 5 to 10 seconds and check if the display comes on on your monitor. If not press the key combination again.
Power up the monitor first then the laptop and the video will switch automatically to the monitor.
The other way, when the laptop is powered up press the Fn key + F4 key, This toggles the video output between the LCD and the external video connector.
