Durabrand 7 " dvd portable started not reading discs suddenly "no valid disk"
I see others with this problem. Please help, it just started happening suddenly.Very frustrating as we've also done all the cleaning , etc. nothing works. Must be timed to break own ;o)
Hmmmm Its still not working. thanks for the advice. I tried the button down & it still says "no valid disc".Hmmmm Its still not working. thanks for the advice. I tried the button down & it still says "no valid disc".
Here is what I got from the Walmart Warranty site & I must say , it worked! I did all the steps and nothing but the part about sliding the lens assembly is what worked. Apparently it was stuck in the top of the dvd player, once I pulled it back to center, no problems.(this was for Durabrand DUR-7) good luck!
Here's the email from them :
Make sure the unit is in DVD Mode.
Try cleaning the laser assembly. First, power off your machine. Find the laser eye located in the centre compartment. It is perfectly round, and made of glass with a bluish tint. To clean, moisten a good Q-Tip in rubbing alcohol (just a little), and gently swab just the glass lens, taking care not to soak it.
Also try resetting the unit. Remove the power/batteries and then hit the power button 10-15 times and then try again. If you continue to have problems unfortunately it sounds as though it is within the electrical assembly. It is hard to say exactly what caused it or exactly what the problem with the circuits are.
Try sliding the arm of the laser all the way in until it "clicked".
If this procedure still did not help you with your problem and you still have your sales receipt, simply exchange the unit to place of purchase.
If the place of purchase can not simply exchange the product you can send your machine to us for service.

I had the same problem......with it saying no valid disc. I tried everything walmart said and it did not work, however, the posting saying that you open the lid and hold the little black button on the lower left down and if it plays then all you need to do is glue something on to hold the button down father worked great!!!!!!! I couldn't believe it something so simple! I glued a piece of my kids craft foam on just to push the button down farther I feel like McGuiver...haha.I had the same problem......with it saying no valid disc. Same message....No valid disc. I cleaned it, did the power reset, and push the button. Now, it works, but I can hear the disc spinning. I don't recall that before. Any thoughts? I had this exact same problem. I took the bottom cover off and took a look at the gears. It turns out I had a rubberband stuck in the gears and it was not letting them turn correctly so I took it out and it works perfectly now.
I had what I think might be the same problem...if it is what ya gotta do is open the door and look on the left side. You will see a little black button, there's a piece on the door that pushes that in when it's closed...it's not....with the door open, push that button down and try playing a dvd, if it works, then you have to find something, try using a clipping from something like a fake nail or a something else that thin that can be super glued on the part on the door that pushes it in...
if it still doesn't work then I don't know...I got this suggestion from another question that was posted and one of the solutions was this..low and behold, it worked for one of the problems that I have with my portable...I still can't fix the second problem...Good luck!

If it is reading a burned movie from the internet make sure you set you brun software for captability mode.
If this is a orginal disk make sure its free of dust and scratches.
1. buy a lens cleaning kit from walmart or any other eletronics store.
2. Make sure the disc is free of scratches.
3. change disc's and see if it works on any others.
if these steps do not help then the laser would need to be replaced. Durabrand is a Wal mart brand i had mine for 2 years and i had to clean the lens 3 times with a cleaning kit.
It can be several reasons
1. Disk is upside down
2. Lens is durty. CD/DVD cleaning disk will help
3. Disk is in different formate (for instance NTSC for US but you trying to playback disk in PAL)
4. Disk has different region code (look is the dvd player and disk have the same code, or ALL Regions code)
Good Luck
I could walk you through a list of tests, but the truth is the unit will need service. The good news is, you can now contact Durabrand and get the tests directly from their website. Please click on the link below: DurabrandTechnical Support, Parts and Accessories
Duarbrand portable DVD players are no longer supported by Walmart because the company contracted to manufacture them is no longer in business. Ripoffreport.com has several complaints on the product line. Walmart has been exchanging the item.
Most DVD players that would display such a message even with a known good disc inside signifies that the that the laser eye/lens is not reading the disc. This could probably be attributed to: 1. dirty, damaged, inverted, blank, un-finalized burned CDs or DVDs; 2. defective, weak burned-out laser eye/lens; 3. defective slider shafting (where the laser eye's carriage moves.
A few things you can try: 1. Use a CD cleaner (readily available from most computer shops); 2. use a can of compressed air and blow through the inside of the loaded disc area; 3. gently tap on the top cover where you estimate the reading/laser eye/lens would be; 4. gently press on the tray door once the disc is loaded.
Should
this not be corrective, perhaps your best bet would be to seek the services of a qualified professional such as those in a Service Center. Alternately, your friendly neighborhood electronic shop should do just fine.
Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Most likely the dvd is dirty, scratched, or chipped. Try cleaning the dvd disk with a soft cloth (chamois works best). Look at the surface of the disk and if it is scratched lightly, dust and dirt particles, fingerprints, etc will cause refractions from the laser light in the dvd player, which is then read as an error by the dvd player. Cleaning it with a soft cloth will sometimes help.
If that does not work, hold the disk up towards a light source and look for light coming through from the other side. If this happens, the disk is unreadable and unrepairable as the data source has been corrupted.
Same here!!! We've only used it maybe 8 or 9 times. And it's been worthless for the past month because of it. It reads everything "no valid disk" and nothing will work. And I tried e-mailing customer support several times, with no luck.
