Hello,

There could be 1 of 3 things affecting this:

1. Is another application using that excel document? If so you will not be able to edit it until the other application stops using it.

2. Is the file currently in a location that you do not have write permissions? eg. another users shared documents

3. Check in the properties to see if it is set to read only. (right click on the document and click properties. in the 'General' Tab see if 'Read Only' is checked. If yes, uncheck it and click okay)

An easy way to make it editable providing you are the only one using it (If the above fixes dont work) open it up in excel and then click File --> Save As... and then save it somewhere else. That will then make it editable for you.

Have a Great Day!

Open Windows Explorer (Not Internet Explorer) and locate the file. Right click on the file and select Properties. At the bottom of the General tab, uncheck the Read Only box and click OK.
This is a duplicate post.

Hello,
Tell your friend to, right click on the file name, then go to "Properties".
On the General tab, at the bottom, see if the checkbox for "Read-only" is selected. If so, uncheck this option and click Ok. The file should now be editable. If this does not work and the file was sent from someone else, ask them to follow the steps above, then resend the file back to your friend.
Let me know if this helps.
Thanks, Raph30

Excel workbook error

I came across this issue today. An update to the Office Compatibility Pack that was still on a computer caused the default PROGRAM for .docx and .xlsx files to be the Microsoft Open XML Converter program and make the "Default Programs" in Control Panel think that Excel and Word were actually the Microsoft Open XML Converter scholarship essay writing assistance program as well.UNINSTALLING the Office Compatibility Pack in Programs and Features and then a simple reboot fixed the issue.
Also:
1: Try to repair it manually when MS Excel does not automatically STARTS File recovery mode.
Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click OPEN.
Now select the corrupted workbook that you want to open.
Click the arrow NEXT to the Open button, and then click Open and Repair.
Choose either Repair (to recover as much of the FILE data) or Extract data (to extract values and formula when repair process is not successful).
2: Open with Open Office: Try to open your Excel file in Open Office. It is an open-source Office suite that is able to open & SAVE Microsoft Excel files.
3: Save in HTML Format: Open your Excel file and save it in HTML format. By saving the workbook in HTML format, you may be able to filter out the corrupted elements.
4: Save in SYLK Format: Open your Excel file and save it in SYLK format. By saving the workbook in SYLK format, you may be able to filter out the corrupted elements.

I have made an excel file with linked data in MS Office 2007.The file opens in read only mode though it is not open in any other location.

Possibly read only option is checked in file properties.

Right click the file and review the setting. Uncheck the read only box if necessary.

I WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE MY EXCEL FILE IN READ ONLY MODE

amjbritto,

There are two ways to do this, depending on what extent you want to protect the spreadsheet.

Windows Read-Only method:
  1. Save and Close the Excel file.
  2. Using Windows Explorer, locate the Excel file in its folder.
  3. Right-click on the file name
  4. Click on "Properties" at the bottom of the drop-down window.
  5. Check the [x] Read-Only box and [OK]
  6. * DONE *
Excel "Protect" Method:

  1. Open the Excel spreadsheet that you want to protect
  2. On the top menu, select [Tools]
  3. Click [Protection] on the drop-down menu
  4. Select [Protect Workbook]
  5. Check [x]Structure and [x]Windows
  6. Enter a password if you wish, but remember it!
  7. Click [OK]
  8. Save and close the spreadsheet and test the protection.
  9. *DONE *
Thanks for using FixYa.

My excel file was working yesterday, but as of

Shouldn't be a date issue... did you open the file the way you normally do ?
Something has changed here... bad shut down with this file opened... maybe.
Open Excel and pull down the File Menu and see if there are more than copy or version of your spreadsheet. Look at all...
File could have corrupted the Font or could be a Virus. Try just changing the font in one cell.
If this is your only copy of the file... make a copy to see if it works on another machine... that will isolate the problem... it may just be corrupt... the fix is Excel healing it on it's own when it opens.
