Re:
Barcode readers are autonomous (no computer interaction required for them to work) readers beep to confirm that the barcode is valid, unfortunately this does not confirm that it has made it to the computer,
you need to ensure that the driver & capture software is installed properly, check that the device is showing correctly in device manager.

Hello Sabrina,
it depends much on the connection between the scanner and computer. The good sign is that the scanner is set correctly to scan the barcode. You need also scan the correct barcode for the connection art. Please scan from the Product Reference Guide the Barcode for USB, RS232 or Keyboard Wedge.
The Product Reference Guide is located at http://support.symbol.com/support/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=5880807apdf
If the scanner beeps just once after a scan, than he recognize the barcode and sends the data to the computer. If you dont receive any data, you are waiting for them on wrong interface. Data from USB or KeyboardWedge do come to Notepad/Word etc. The data from Serial RS232 Connection can you see only in Hyperterminal or similar application.
Hello,
it looks like the scanner lost the settings. As power is there, so connection is ok. The several (four) beeps after reading the barcode means communication error.
Please try to find the original sheet with configuration barcodes or download it from support.symbol.com website, you would need to scan the barcode for IBM PC/AT & IBM Compatibles from Keyboard Wedge Chapter.

I'll keep trying to find the right one.
