The drum was not spinning during the wash but the motor was working fine, so have removed belt as it appears to be damaged. I now notice that when I try to spin the drum by hand it doesn't move smoothly, it appears to get stuck or rub on something on one side. Also I can't figure out how to take the back cover off the machine in order to replace the belt.

possibly the motor brushes.
take back panel off and motor is held in by bolts which undo - also disconnect electrical plug and socket.
check condition of brushes

sound like the contact points on the timer are probebly dirty or arched to where they are not making good contact. you can take and clean them with a piece of emery cloth if you are mechanically inclined and can take the timer apart. Also there's a set of contacts down by the motor ti check too.
Good Luck,

If the machine pumps water inside but does not start :
Start checking the lid switch, if this is stuck the machine wont start.
If the drum does not move at all, the motor, the motor control unit, the motor coupler, the control board may be faulty.

Hi. The motor is non adjustable on this washer. Tilt washer forward, get someone to hold it steady, and put belt round motor pulley first, then slip belt on drum pulley, and slowly turn drum by hand, feeding the belt on as you turn drum, be careful not to trap fingers, as it is very tight, this is normal, as the belt is a stretch type, this is the reason the motor is non adjustable. Please rate my advice. Thanks.

if you have gotten that far your good
now try to look at the motor it sounds like your belt might be a lil off track on the mortor shaft
there is a adjustment srew on the top left of the motro its hidden under things but its there
you can looses this and swing the motor
make sure you have it lined up on the motor shaft and it should stay aligned on the pully

Managed to get the new belt on, but this has just made the drum movement even more stiff. I guess the damage to the original belt was probably caused by what even is wrong with the drum.
