I would like to set up my desktop and my laptop to network together.
I have a Dell power connect 2016 that I used once years ago (way before huge external hard drives) to transfer all the data from one pc to a nother years ago during an upgrade. I now use a laptop on the road and would like to create a home network to sink the two copmuters when home. I thought it would be just plug and play so to speak, hovever it seems there is more to it than just plugging the 2 computors into the power conect and hitting enter.
Any help will be appreicate,

Internet -> Port 1 or 16
ComputerA -> Port 2
ComputerB -> Port 3
I say port 1 or 16 because on older equipment there is an uplink port that is usually either the lowest or highest port number depending on the manufacturer. Set both computers IP addresses to use DHCP in this scenario. If you aren't connecting to the internet, both computers need to have their ip address set manually to a number in the same "neighborhood" (i.e. set A to 192.168.1.2 and set B to 192.168.1.3), then they will see each other.
P.S. If this switch is super old you may have to use a special ethernet cable called a "crossover" cable which has the wiring flipped on each end, later models introduced a button which could do the same thing with a regular cable, this button is a good indicator of whether it is port 1 or 16 because it will be located next to that port. Today's models now autosense whether the uplink needs to be crossed over or not so you no longer see this button on modern models.
