Is this connecting through the HDMI input, via analogue connectors or the digital Coax connections?

If you are using an HDMI cable dont expect sound to come out (even thought HDMI carries both audio and video) the onkyo HT-s5100's Receiver is the HT-r560. the 500 models of the onkyo receiver does not allow HDMI to carry both audio and video. it only allows the video signal to pass to the receiver.

if youre using optical for audio w/c is what you need then these are the steps you need to follow.
*first make sure that the optical connections are ok at the back of the receiver.
*make sure that your DIGITAL INPUT is set to either OPT1 or OPT2 whichever optical input you used to connect the optical cable.
*then go to your PS# settings : go to sound settings / audio moutput settings/ select digital out (optical).

then enjoy.....ü

Ps3 doesnt give out a surround sound output

Hi
In this configration you will not get surround sound. Because tv is not able to reproduse the surround sound through its out put from the HDMI input. You have to connect the HDMI of PS3 to the Onkyo receiver and the HDMI Monitor Out of the Onkyo to the TV. This can only done if the Onkyo AVR Have HDMI IN/OUT option.

If not the connect the Optical out of PS3 to any one of the optical input of the Onkyo receiver.
After that you have to goto the setup Menu the Onkyo and assing the optical input in wich you have conncted the PS3.

Aslo the following setting in PS3

Menu>>> Settings >>> Sound Settings >>> Audio Output Settings >>> Select the connector..= DIGITAL OUTPUT (OPTICAL)

Playing a blu ray disk on PS3 connected with optical cable to the Onkyo, I only get a PCM signal, no DTS or 5.1 (although this is available on the BD)

Hi there,

In theory, your receiver's decoder should be able to automatically "detect" the incoming audio format. But, this only occurs if the device playing the disc is sending the correct audio format.

So, with this said, there should be a fun tion on your PS3 where you can manually select either Dolby 5.1 or DTS 5.1. Both of these are opposing formats (i.e. can only output one format at a time).

If you were to play a movie disc from a standard DVD player into your Onkyo receiver, you would normally have to manually select DTS 5.1 audio from the disc menu.

Does the PS3 menu allow you to manually select the audio output?

Unsure of audio setting using Onkyo TX-SR606 connected to PS3

The PS3 should default to the DOLBY DIGITAL sound output so your ONKYO should be setup to the Digital input, TV logic is a matrix similated multi-channel and I doubt if any PS software is in the DTS audio format, look at your game software disc`s and they will inform you of the audio capabilities.

No audio from my PS3 through the Onkyo 5100 7.1

Have you assigned the audio to the optical cable? I am doing the same thing with awesome results. Simply go into your PS3 main menu under System Settings. You can then go to either audio or video options. I prefer to go the Video Options route, since it will ask if you would like to change the audio as well. In Video Options it should state something about the Video Output and to the right of that you will see you current resolution settings. Select this and set your resolution options. It will then ask you if you would like to assign audio options, and you will need to choose yes. In here it will let you assign what port the audio should be assingned to. Choose the Optical Out option and then click enter. From there you should hear the sound through your Onkyo.

No surround sound from my PS3 through the Onkyo 5100. Video OK

Unfortunately only the higher end Onkyo Reciever pass audio over HDMI for sound. 605,705,805,905 exc. Your reciever will carry Video over HDMI but you will need a digital optical cable for sound.

Ps3 defaults to 576p when connected through onkyo 606 receiver

You have to tell the PS3 what the Okyo can do and it probably cannot do 1080P 60Hz (but can likely do 1080P 24Hz).  Try ticking more resolutions in the PS3s setup
