Boot up problem

I have an old Compaq prosignia 150 running windows 98. The dc power jack broke and i disassembled the laptop and replaced the faulty jack with a new one.On re assembly i plugged in the dc power jack, the green led comes on to indicate power is coming through but when i press the on button nothing happens, not even a sound of the hdd spinning, any suggestions as to what is wrong.

Could you hear the sound of the Fan insidle? I think there should be a fan inside of this kind of old laptop. Please have a check. If the fan is OK. I think you should there should be something wrong with the mother board inside. You could try cleaning your CMOS by some way and try again. Of course. the first thing you gonna do is checking whethere all the connections of your new power jack is ok. Jimmie

The green led only shows the power is added on to your mother board. But the mother board have to trigger something (like the crystal 37.825Hz) to make the system on. Check the coms first then have another try. Or, I think your mother board should have some problem.

Check and see if your DC connector is loose:

Symptoms of a broken power jack
1. If you wiggle the power cord or the AC Adapter connector on the back of the laptop, the power LED and battery charge LED start to flicker.
2. Battery will not charge in the laptop.
3. Laptop runs fine off a charged battery.
4. With the AC Adapter connected the laptop appears to be dead.
No power LED or battery charge LED activity.
5. Laptop randomly powers off without any warning.

If your laptop is out of warranty, then you can fix the problem by re-soldering DC-IN jack on the system board. If it

When I turn on my Prosignia 144 it goes straight to a screen that says Compaq. Is it just doing that because it needs to charge or is it broken?

This is usually the post boot screen, most pc's/laptops show this before booting up, if its not going any futher then you may have a damaged instalation or just a damaged MBR.
If you google MBR fix you should have a good idea what you need to do

When I turn it on sometimes it comes right up other times I get nothing but black screen. I bought it used the seller says it was working fine but I downloaded some upgrades and it has been funky ever...

Hello sir, hi the compaq pro signia is a good laptop, but im not sure if you had a good deal with it, as I see it, your laptop system board has serious problems with its system board and power supply board. The failure of the unit to respond quickly on power up is already a sign of system board defects, You may need to thoroughly check the system board for faulty capacitors. which would cost you extra for repairs. Try to bring it on a laptop service center for diagnostics.

Toshiba plug-in ac adapter LCDlight flashing and wont boot up

It may be that you need a new, (Or good condition used), motherboard. You may not.

The problem could be the DC Power Jack. The DC Power Jack is small, and the body is made of plastic. Sometimes there is a metal shell around the plastic body. (The jack is a rectangular shape, and is just a little larger, than the outside portion of that AC adapter plug!)

This is an example of a DC Power jack for a Toshiba Satellite a215-s5807,
http://www.notebookworks.net/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=NBW52-0133

As you know there is a metal pin in the center, and at the back of the round hole, there are flat metal contacts.

Let me explain the construction of a DC Power Jack, and how it's mounted to a motherboard. This all has relevance to the solution.

Your laptop uses DC electricity. (The AC adapter converts AC to DC. Your laptop battery, and a flashlight battery, are examples of stored DC electricity)

DC uses a Positive connection, and a Negative connection. The metal pin in the center is Positive. The flat metal strips at the back are Negative.

That laptop DC Power Jack has metal prongs, that come out of the plastic body. One prong, (Or pin), connects to the Positive metal round pin, in the center of the jack.
There may be one, or two prongs, (Or pins), that come out of the plastic body, and connect to the Negative side of the jack. (Flat metal strips)
These prongs go down through holes in the motherboard, and are soldered on.

With the AC adapter plugged in, an accidental bump on the plug itself, could break the body of the jack, or break solder joints that hold the jack to the motherboard.

AC adapter removed, and battery removed. Use a NON-metallic object, and see if you can make the center pin of the jack move. See if the entire jack itself seems to move.
A.If the center pin moves, you have a broken DC Power Jack.
B.If the entire jack moves, you have cracked solder joints. (Broken)

Replacement of the DC Power Jack for A.
Re-solder the solder joint/s for B.

Cost of replacing a jack at a reputable computer repair shop? $90 to $150
Cost of re-soldering solder joints? $50 to $90
Cost of replacing the motherboard?
$250 on up.

If you are a skilled person with the correct tools, it is feasible for you to replace the jack, or re-solder the solder joints.
It is also feasible that you yourself, could replace the motherboard.

Some laptops have a poor motherboard design, for where the DC Power Jack is mounted to the motherboard.

Crude explanation would be, that the main body of the motherboard is a 1 foot square. Then a 2 inch square comes out of the side of the main body.
The DC Power Jack is mounted to that 2 inch square. From accidental bumping, OR just normal usage of inserting, and removing the AC adapter plug, this 2 inch square can crack away from the main body.
This, of course would require a motherboard replacement.

Disassembly instructions for a Satellite A200 and A205 Series laptops. Very close to the A215 Series,
http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/toshiba-satellite-a205/laptop-disassembly-1.htm

(Don't forget to buy, and use a cheap ESD wrist strap, to prevent static shock to the delicate hardware components, inside your laptop. Average cost is $7)

Motherboard issue

It's a power issue. The battery is flat. (No charge present) The AC adapter (Charger) is plugged in. The DC Power Jack has an intermittent contact. (The DC Power Jack is where the AC adapter plugs in. The charger)

The DC Power Jack is broken itself, or where it's soldered onto the motherboard, the solder joint/s are broken. This gives an intermittent contact. To see if this is the issue, try holding the plug for the charger over to one side, when it's plugged into the laptop. You may have to move it side to side, or up an down, to see.

If this is the issue, the DC Power jack costs about $6 bucks. The cost to replace it is $120 to $150.

The tech has to completely disassemble the laptop, until just the motherboard is in hand. The old DC Power Jack is unsoldered, and a new one is soldered in. Then the laptop is reassembled.

IF, you can find a shop! Most of the time the entire motherboard is changed out. Now you're talking Ducketts! $$$$$$$

CPU fan operates but laptop otherwise dead ?

Remove the battery and plug in the power adapter. Attempt to power on the laptop. If nothing happens, then try holding the power cord, at the jack, at a different angle. Wiggle it a little and see if the laptop will come on. If it does come on, then wiggle it some more and see if the laptop cuts off.

This will determine if your DC Jack is faulty. I have resoldered a bunch of these on this model. Usually the solder around the HOT pin on the mainboard cracks. Thus, you don't get a good power connection.

Now, as far as the laptop coming on with the battery.... how long will it run on just the battery? A couple seconds? Or a couple minutes? Or until you turn it off? If the battery were about dead, then it would come on for just a couple seconds but not POST. Meaning no video or anything. But if it comes on and runs for several minutes without turning off, then a weak battery isn't the problem. It should still POST and show video and all that.

So, even if you get the DC Jack fixed, assuming its faulty, this may or may not solve your POST problem. Never know really until the dc jack is for sure supplying good steady power.
