My dryer turns off as soon as I release the start button. Other weird signs are the Moisture Monitor lights flicker intermittently like there's a short or something. Also, when I turn the dial around to different positions it sometimes kicks on for a second without me pushing the start button.
Any ideas?

Lots of questions spring to mind, but if you have a push button type, it will only continue to turn once the motor is in motion. centripetal action allows a motor switch to keep the dryer in operation. look in that area.if you have a belt tentioner. check for continuity.

This video shows you how to test the start button on a MaytagDryer. ... dryer medc200xw0 will not keep running after releasing the start button.
Hello , bad news here , when you press the start button it sends power to the motor and then a clutch sets in and closes a set of points that then sends power to your element -if the clutch does not engage the motor will not continue to run or send power to the element and that is what is happening to your dryer.
not an easy fix at all , the clutch is bad and its located inside the motor and the entire motor would need replaced to repair this problem. they range from 80-100 dollars and would take about 1-2 hours to change.
let me know if you have any other questions.

there is a holding contact at the motor wiring, check the schematics and trace that holding contact. it should hold the motor running as soon as it starts.
