My wife says that our LG plasma TV, which we bought brand-new about a month ago, is emitting a smell. What could this be?
I had the same prob and thought it would burn off. It didn't after a month. Read the comments and tried the plug direct into wall socket plus i washed off the tv surface several times. Now no smell. Not sure which action cured the problem but i'm now happy. It was so bad i had to leave a window open and at times i would gag from the smell.

I believe what we have here is that plazma TV's are generating ozone. I can't prove it, but mine sure smells like ozone.

Ozone is generated by an electrical arc. The old CRT set used to do this bit when the HV leaked from the cap. But there is not a strong enouth voltage in Plasma's to maintain an arc the set would shut down or break down before long. LCD set with Cold cathode fluoros back lighting have very high voltages that could create an corona. but the circuit would break down before to long also, under the load.

I imagine it is the new silicone grease coatings on the electrical components. These tvs tend to run hot and it should burn off after a few days.

I turned my 32 inch Vizio LCD TV off for a few days as I was sick of the same old programming junk and whaddaha know.. I am starting to breathe easy again. Jeeez and the whole time i thought it was because I was not vacuuming enough or it was the laptop that was giving me a headache.. nope.. culprit is the damn TV. NOw i remember when I first got it, i was sick as a chained up dog in the sun . And could not figure out why.

I just got a replacement for my 42 Inch Vizio and it started to smell when I turned it on. It may burn off but that still doesn't mean it may not still be emitting something. The original Vizio did not have an issue and my other smaller model in my house doesn't have a smell issue. But this one certainly does.

LG32"LCD450..when I opened the box I could smell a strong chemical or plastic odor which burned my eyes, my throat and my breathing. When we pulled out the TV the odor was extremely strong. We removed all the clear protective materials and the set (not turned on yet) emitted horribly strong odors especially at the back.
Our solution: the TV is now in our unfinished basement(but very dehumidified and dry) and we are running it several hours during the day.. so far no improvement.
They are killing us with chemicals and wonder where our kids are more asthmatic and people get cancer who never smoked.

The smell i'm getting is the cross between electrical and bleach and everyone including the manufacturer can't tell me what it is!
The smell from my new plasma TV is scary - toxic. I don't even want to go into the room. It's a Panasonic 42". I've called Best Buy and they're supposed to be sending a repaor guy out today. If I get an answer I'll post it.
Mine smells too, I am afraid of it, smells like it could be dangerous to inhale... Anyone figure it out? Mines an LG 50 too.
I called the gas company because I thought it was my fireplace. They found no problem with gas or carbon monoxide. After they left I thought of the 50 " Plasma TV. That's where the smell was coming from.
No idea what the problem is
just got a new 40'' samsung lcd series 5 and its smelling my whole house up like burnt electronics. defenitly toxic i dont even wanna watch the dame thing cause im scared its gonna give me cancer
My Panasonic plasma forces air out the top rear which smells as if a mouse has died in there, I have checked and no mouse, I think it is the hot dust that covers everything in side the tv. Any bright ideas?
We stored our Vizio TV for 3 months. We did not have this problem previously but now it emits a smell like burning plastic. Is this just annoying? Or is it dangerous? Will it go away? Why is this happening now? Please help!!
I am having the same problem with my 42 in. Panasonic plasma screen. the whole apartment smells like electrical burning--so bad it gives me a headache! i saw someone posted not to plug in to an extension cord, which is what i had been doing. why is that? is that what causes the burning smell?
I have a 42 inch Panasonic plasma television that I purchased in September 2007. Just recently it began emitting a chemical like odor that makes my eyes burn and makes my asthma react. The TV appears to be functioning properly yet have only recently noted this problem. Has this been noted by anyone as sets begin to age?
It's not just plasma. I bought a new LDC and an HDTV tube TV in 2008 and am having the same problems. They both emit strong electrical odors as well as other melting-plastic-type odors, etc., that irritate my throat, burn my eyes and my lungs! I not only smell all these noxious odors, but I even get that electrical/chemical taste in my mouth. I absolutely cannot stand being in the same room with either. They are in the garage where I tried outgasing them by turning them on for several hours each day, but the odors are all still there. I wonder if the electrical smell and taste are caused by radiation? What's the answer?

mine is a Magnavox HDTV. Works just fine and is only 2 months old. Never had the smell at the start and then 2 months into ownership it begins smelling like plastic burning. TV is not hot...it works...the smell is so bad that it leaves a taste in your mouth and gives me a headache. I have unlugged it and am trying to findout just what is it and what was I exposed to?
