No TX/ rx Radio Shack TRC-495

it probably jumped freq. somehow. There is now manual or anything but a picture of this radio and a few tune up rv's but thats it.I have the exact same radio and it works fine If you can put it on an oscilloscope it should tell you right away what the problem is. Then try a frequency counter.

I would open up the radio and look for burnt traces, primarily by the output transistor and near where the power comes in. If you have another radio near by (within several feet) and it transmits on the same channel that your radio is on, can you hear it?? If you transmit on your radio, does the working one hear you? If you open your squelch, does it make noise?? If you transmit, does the RF power meter go up?? If any of these questions are YES, then there is a good possibility that your ANTENNA SWITCHING diodes are shorted or open. The TX diode is probably open and your RX diode is shorted. OR both. If the other radio is hearing you, and you are hearing the other radio, then the radio section is very likely OK. The diodes switching the antenna between RX and TX often fail, especially if there has been a lightning strike in the vicinity. It doesn't matter if your radio is on or not, or if you have a surge protector, a nearby lighting strike can take these diodes out.

If you don't have as much as a Channel number coming up on your radio, then the problem is most lkely somewhere in the radios internal power supply.

No transmit on 148gtl

First is check to see if SSB transmits or not==if it does the AM regulator on side wall of radio is bad.

Second with a meter and no power on--test the driver and final for shorts or open.

If one is bad replace both.

let me know what you find.

Cobra 18 wx st receives-wont transmit

Take the cover off, flip it over solder side up, check all solder joints for cracks, cold solder joints, check the safety diode where it comes in the radio, before I go further, can you pick up the weather channel?...Does the PA work?...need to check the pre-driver and finals,audio chip, hook up the power meter using a coax three foot jumper from the output from radio to the input of the watt meter, then the antenna, first check the SWR, on the scale on the meter to cal/swr mode,adjust it to spec, then while still keyed down turn the dial to SWR,if it is the safe range your ok,then turn the Dial to 10 or 20 watt scale and key the mic. Does it have any wattage? If not suspect the finals, they are located on the back rail, if it does have RF then its the audio chip, its located on the right side rail facing you,closest to you.remove it and replace it with same ....hope this helps....

The power is on, however, when I use the mic and speak the "needle" doesn't move, I have tried different mics. Also, the sound coming from the radio is also very soft.

When you say the sound coming from the radio is very soft, are you talking about talk back? if so, you want that soft. If you are talking about reception then just get an external speaker.

If the radio is working, and transmitting ok, the meter is not important.

You may want to get an external meter to make sure SWR's are good.

If it is not transmitting at all, there could be a real problem and the radio needs a tech.

Hi,

Initially, pls check/clean your antenna, mount, coaxial cable, RF connector, power leads, grounding straps.

Based on your post description, a couple of ideas:
1. Since you receive OK, chances are the antenna/cable is good. You verify though with an SWR meter;
2. Since TX light comes on, looks like the mic, PTT and coiled cord are all OK;
3. All else works but no one can hear you, you have no power output. Use an RF wattmeter with dummy load to verify that you are pushing at least 25 watts. In the absence of a power meter, the SWR would also do or even an indication of a significant current flow to the radio ( use an inline ammeter) would indicate power.
As you will note, some specialized instruments are needed. Perhaps your best bet would be to seek the services of a qualified communications technician. TMore often it is the finals or power pack that fails resulting in no TX. In some cases, it is either the RF diode or the power regulator that causes no TX. It may also be worth your while to do a full check over of your antenna system.

Hope this be of some help. Pls post back how things turns up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
