Was the device dropped or damanged? The most common problem is a cracked screen. The crack is on the back so you can't see it. The screen will need to be replaced.
Its only worth it for a 16GB or more. It costs $79.99 total to get a new screen installed. http://www.thegadgetdr.com/Creative-Zen-Repair-White-or-Cracked-LCD-Screen-p/rs-zen-lcd.htm
The part is available on ebay and there is a free repair guide for creative zens. I know only one third party place that repairs creative zen players. If you just want to get the music out you can stick the hard drive on an iPod video logic board (they are compatible) and use a utilty like sharepod to extract the music.
I would actually try taking it into a tech place where they can at least recover your hard drive... I would try calling Creative and finding out how much it would cost to replace the screen on it. If not, at least check maybe eBay and have somebody from a local electronics store (best buy, geek squad, radioshack, etc) try to put it on for you. Some places might even be able to order the parts for you.
Is it a Vision?
Because I have a Creative Zen Touch that had a hard drive failure... So if it's a Creative Zen Touch, I'd be willing to send you the damn thing so you can take the screen off of it since it's just collecting dust now.
Hope some of this helps?
try watching ebay for zen repair service. Or for a broken player that you could buy and do the swap yourself.
see how to do it here:
