When you turn the camera on it makes quite a loud continuous clicking noise. Also the shutter doesn't open properly so when you take a picture you get dark shadows in the opposite corners. Any Suggestions?

I think what you're referring to is the lens assembly not moving in and out correctly. The shutter is inside the camera out of view. Go to this website for possible solutions:
It could be the cold affecting them but I suspect it's a battery problem.
If you use normal alkaline AA's then the camera will drain them fast. Try using the lithium type which has a higher Amh for use in high drain electronic gadgets like cameras.
The cold weather will affect things like cameras, especially when you bring them in from the cold after long periods. Condensation will form inside the camera and cause short circuits or component failure unless you allow the camera to aclimatise to room tempreture gradually before using it.
Condensation can also have an effect on the shutter inside the lens. It cannot evaporate well inside the lens unit because it is sealed and so leaves a residue on the shutter leafs that can cause the shutter to either stick or not work fully and you get either wavey lines on the pictures that you take or they come out over exposed or too bright.
Leave the camera for 24 hours at room tempreture and buy ( if you haven't already got) some lithium batteries and then try the camera
press the red button on the side to open camera mode> click the little menu button (this should be the right hand button when you use your phone normaly)> scroll across to the very last option (this should be settings)> click okay> scroll down till you find an option saying shutter> click okay> chose none and click okay to exit it.
if this doesn't work put your phone in silent/ meeting mode
timndege,
You are taking long exposures over 3 seconds, the camera does make some slight noise while the timer is going through the count down, that is normal, as long as the shutter is doing what it is supposed to do and your image is coming out (and the ones over 3 seconds also) it sounds normal. Only if it is hanging up and taking longer than the time you are describing, then the shutter should be cleaned.

Today I was taking photos and the camera quit...the top display says err. The book says release shutter, but I push the shutter and it does nothing but make a little click and the err stays. I took the lens off, and the camera does look like the shutter is open or something.
Press the power button on and hold it down while extending and twisting the telescopic zoom lens. It might fix your problem.
In any case it could not make it worse
Good luck!
I'm not sure what "clean the assembly" means?
Do I need to take it apart?
