Yes you could fix it yourself by checking, and if needed re-installing the audio drivers into the XP operating system. Check the device manager and verify that the audio drivers are installed.

Can you use your SYSTEM RESTORE function? You can find it:
Start> all programs> accessories> system tools>system restore.
If this doesn't fix it, I always fall back on Realtek Audio sound drivers. I've never found anything that Realtek wouldn't get the sound working on yet. You can google it and download it for free.
Short of that, it sounds like you will need to restore your sound drivers to make your sound work.

the error 1316 message usually means a previous installation of a software is
getting in the way of the new installation. It's kinda nutty that this
would cause a problem, but we live in a nutty world. The fix is to
download a free program from Microsoft that will totally and completely
remove the old software. Then the new version can load unimpeded. try to open ur local disk properties-->on general tab use disk clean up.. if that not work properly need to try Download: Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from and run it to .u can download these here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Marginal hard drive, hard drive cable, or hard drive controller (on motherboard).
Other suspect parts may be the CD ROM drive you're trying to run the OS install from. It may also be flaky, causing you to think you're loading the OS, but not really and not reporting errors until you discover the OS is not completely installed.
First thing to do is pull the HDD and cable out, reseat firmly and try again. May as well do the same for the CD/DVD drive.
