RCA HD61LPW42YX2 TV has a triangular shadow in the upper left corner of screen, it has become larger over the past 3 weeks. I've read that other people have had this problem. Is it a color wheel problem or is it the light engine. I've contacted some repair shops and was told that the light engine was unavailable. I hope you can help, or anyone else who has resolved this same problem.

I have exactly the same problem with my set and thought a piece of a label or something had gotten in the way of the light projector or something. What are we to do, and how much does it cost? Is this fix a more permanent one? With better parts, so the same thing won't happen 2 or 3 years down the road? Thanks, and misery loves company.....$2900.00 in 7/2004

I am an RCA tech and can tell you what your problem is. There in an appeture tunnel to the left of the color wheel. The light from the wheel passes thru this tunnel. The tunnel is made of 4 rectangular mirrors which are pieced together in a square. What happens is that the mirrors shift and instead of being square they become rectangular. The only way to fix this is to either replace the light engine of repair it. I take the engines apart and repair the mirrors, however I strongly advise against it because the entire engine must be taken apart to get to this tunnel. I guess this isn't the solution you wanted, but it may save you the money of buying unnessesary parts which you can't return and will have lost that money. If you go thru RCA service center, they can send your engine back to a repair center and rebuild it for you. Hope this helps you.

There is a shadow in the upper left corner of the screen

someone is going to have to look inside by either removing the rear upper part of the set or removing the entire front screen---neither is easy to do. But considering your trouble I would not be surprised if the mirror is cracked---the entire front screens would have to be removed to replace the mirror--special mirror and special handling--I have seen several break when someone is not careful putting in.

DARK SHADOW EFFECT UPPER CORNERS OF SCREEN

I would check for dust particles before I attempted any type of repair on the unit.

Dust particles will appear as dark spots that are larger than the size of an individual pixel. It must first be determined if the particle(s) are on the LCD panels or the screen.

I have a 5 year old RCA 61LPW42 HD DLP television. A few months ago a small dark shadow appeared in the upper left corner of the screen. Over time it has creeped down and become larger. Still starting...

It's the light tunnel. The tunnel is a square tube made up of 4 mirrors glued together.

It looks like this from the side: |_| (with a piece on top too.)
When the glue breaks down, it shifts inside the little mirror holder. The shifted mirrors looks like this /_/ what you are seeing is the shadow of the tilted mirror tunnel.
ON the RCA's there's not a good fix.

RCA's response:
"Ok, well sadly they do not offer the light tunnel anymore, which is what you need. Sadly you would be rendered to get a whole new light engine assembly. That would be the D.N.D module, light tunnel, color wheel, optic spanner, and oci. mirror. Your best bet would be to search ebay for a broken engine and replace it that ways."

That is the ONLY response I got from them.

I took the set apart and found the 4 tiny mirrors. I will be attempting to epoxy them together. (The set is dead anyway, why not try?)

If you have the extended warranty, use it immediately. This happened with ours after our 1 year warranty expired and found out it would cost us over $1000 to have it fixed. We've read that RCA used faulty glue that can't withstand the heat inside, causing a mirror to slowly slip over time. Our dark shadow keeps growing and growing.

RCA should have recalled this to fix it for everyone.

Triangular shadow on the upper left corner

You may have a dirty or blocked mirror. You can usually take the back off and clean them. If you don't feel confident about it, a repairman can do it for you. If you clean it yourself, I recommend using a good quality glass cleaner and any type of towel that doesn't produce lint. Coffee filters work very well. Don't leave any streaks!
