RCA F31317 31" TV Turning self off and on then completely off
I just purchased this TV second hand and the people said that it turns off and on every so often like every other hour (hey for $20 I can deal with that), but when I got it home the problem happened every half minute to only a few seconds! The TV would just turn itself off and then back on but after a few times it just gives up and turns self off completely. I already tried the hard reboot and I really don't want to have to take this monster down and up 3 flights of narrow stairs again. Does this problem sound familiar? Any help would be very much appreciated
Re: RCA F31317 31" TV Turning self off and on then...
I had a similar problem with my tv. Mine had been sitting outside for about a month. After using it for about a month the channells started changing themselves on occasion. Next came it turning off automatically. I physically took it apart and removed the switches (i.e. in your case the one to the power button) I did this aprox. 1 year ago, so I can't remember which wire I cut... but not I just use a remote to turn it on and off. good luck

turn it off at the wall for 10 minutes
then turn it back on and move the thermostat setting to see if you can feel the compressor start to run
if is is running ( vibrations in the freezer walls ) place a bucket of water in the freezer and set it on close to max cold
freezers need heat in the cabinet to make the liquid gas boil off to a gas and that heat is provided by the water
if the unit is working , the water will turn to ice in a coup[le of hours
could be a problem thermostat

This is typically referred to as a color purity problem and can be caused by two main things. The first cause can be stray magnetic fields which can 'magnetize' the TV screen either by something magnetic begint oo close to the screen or having turned the direction of the TV while it is turned on. If this is a purity issue caused by magnetic fields, it can usually be cirrected by powering off the TV for about 1/2 hour and turning it back on. All tube TVs have build in 'degaussing' circuits to cure just this issue.
If this doesn't fix it the other cause is a shifted shadow mask inside the picture tube itself and cannot be corrected.
It sounds magnetised. Is there a magnet near that side... like a speaker?
It probably needs degaussed. Many TV shops have a device that does this, at a cost to you. Also, the set degauses itself for about a second when it's first turned on after being off for a while. So it may go away by itself eventually.
Do a Hard Reset. Unplug the power cord and cable for 4 hours.
If the power protection circuit has taken over the set due to some shorted conditions internally, then the hard reset should allow you to turn it back on but if the condition remains, it will just go into auto off again. This means there is a hardware problem that is locking up the protection circuit. Since there are so many possible areas in the set that can cause this, you will need a service tech to do the hands-on diagnosis for it.
