How do i turn my microphone on and off for voice recognition?

Well there is no nice On/off switch but if you want to tell windows which microphone to use open the control panel and open ?Sounds and Audio Devices?. Open the Voice tab and at the bottom of that box you should see a section labeled Voice recording. If you have another microphone installed you should be able to use the pull down menu to select it. If you just want to prevent the internal microphone from picking up anything click on the Volume button and turn down the mic sensitivity by moving the slider bar to the bottom. Hope this helps.

the voice recognition system built into windows 7 is quite good, however if you do not wish to use that, you might find Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11 Premium (199$) extremely good, or if that's not in your budget, Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11 Home ($99) is also well to do.

I will first want to ask that do your laptop have a built in microphone like that use for speech recognition? If yes, has your skype account been configured to use this microphone? if no, configure that in the settings tab of your skype account.
If your laptop do not have an in built microphone then get a head phone that has a microphone attached to it and configure it in your skype account.

Toshiba laptop Microphone Not working or Non-existant?
Click Start/All Programs/Accessories/Sound Recorder. Click Start Recording and talk to your computer in a normal voice. When you finish click Stop Recording. Type in a file name and click save. Open the file and play it. If it works you have a built in mike, otherwise buy yourself an external, which I recommend anyway, because the built in mikes are generally not good enough for voice recognition or VOIP.

The built in mic on my dell inspiron 1525 does not work
Have you checked to see whether the correct settings have been selected for the microphone in the Control Panel>Hardware>Audio Devices page? Once you see which driver works (i.e., which one responds to your voice), right-click and set that as the default. Or you can try to set up the Speech Recognition program under All Programs>Accessories>Ease of Access, and try the different microphone settings till the onboard one responds to your voice. Perhaps the SigmaTel driver has been updated since you bought the laptop--go to the Dell Download site and download the sound driver for it, see if one of these helps!

Acer aspire 5570 z series laptop computer
Normal 0 Go to Control Panel and Click on Sounds, Click on Audio, then Click on the Microphone. Then Click on the drop down and unselect Camera Microphone.
Click OK and it should be shut off.
