connect the ipod to pc start itunes when it detects the ipod in recover mode click on restore button to restore the firmware it will download and reinstall the firmware
if it isn't detected in recovery mode then simply click on update button when it is detected normally in itunes.
red cross? I have had unhappy faces on my ipod, but not a red cross. Hmmn, my best bet is that the software is corrupt. Try restoring the iPod and see if that works.
1. Try reset, hold down the top of the click wheel and the centre button TOGETHER for more than 10 seconds. If you see the Apple icon it is reset & restarting.
2. If that doesn't work it's possible the hard disc is failing. Listen to the iPod, if it is making scratchy or clicking sounds it is about to die.
3. Google "iPod repairs" in your country and they might be able to replace it. Otherwise you can get an exchange unit from Apple. Take it to your nearest Authorised Apple Service Centre and they will get it exchanged in a couple of days. Unfortunately this might cost almost as much as a new one
