Question about Canon DV-MV830i Mini DV Digital Camcorder
Whenever I playback my CANON MV830 I am get 5 Grey Horizontal lines across the screen and the sound is a bit distorted and snatches of conversation are missing. I have tried cleaning the cassette heads but the problem remains. The problem is there with every tape I try to play despite these tapes playing perfectly before. Please can someone offer a solution. I would be extremely grateful.
Someone here recommended on another post to put the lense cap on & videotape the blackness in a quiet room for 5-10 mins. I tried this as a last resort & it worked. When I played back the tape, no more skipping or gray lines. I had 4-5 SOLID gray lines with skipping video & audio in between on every tape I put in. I think the person who helped me solve this said that it was a result of the tape alignment going off. My camera is a Canon zr80 digital camcorder. (Called Canon, they had me reset it & then recommended sending it in).

Hi, your problem exactly match with the symptoms of dirt in video head, this can prevent the audio also being muted.. If normal head cleaning tape is not of much help to you then you can get it done from the technician. If you are skilled with these kind of equipments ,then open the camcorder door, put some cleaning solution(old spice after shave is good) and gently move over the video head to get it cleaned slowly.. all the best sreejith

Unfortunately I cleaned heads and have same problem. It seems my camcorder fell too often on the floor. It looks like some poor contact inside from the head for playback. To get to the head contacts means taking absolutely everything out...a lot of effort...I'll let you know if I handled it somehow.
I thought second reason may be electronical. It happened to me after camcorder was in cold. Not drying out properly (warming up) and switching onb - might have damaged the electronics.
Greetings,
J.

I've just been able to fix the Grey lines problem when I play back video on my DV Camera.
I tried a mixture of advice:
-First I ran a Mini DV Head Cleaner through my camera, that actually made things look worse
-Then I cleaned the head manually with vodka and some fine thread material, that put things back to how they were originally
-Then I tried to realign the play head by recording on a new tape with the lens cap on for about 3 minutes. I rewound and played back the blackness and it didn't have the grey lines, so I put my old tape in and within 10 seconds the lines all disappeared.
I'm definitely not a techy person, but somehow with a mixture of advice I was able to fix the problem. Thank you internet!
