To take you to the download page for the XT on canon's website.
You have to choose the operating system you are using (since it wasnt stated in the question.
There are other downloads on this page as well.

The actual camera manual is hidden in the "Guides and manuals" section.

I put in XP as the OS, and it appeared 3rd from the bottom in that section.

Need installation software to download Canon Digital Rebel XT/EOS to my computer so I can download pictures. I have misplaced the disk which came with the camera. Is it possible to download that software...

You can download Canon software from
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/eos_slr_camera_systems/eos_digital_slr_cameras/digital_rebel_xt#DriversAndSoftware

You might want to consider NOT connecting the camera to the computer. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.

You can download Vista drivers and utilities from Canon site (http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010192.asp). Select "Windows Vista" as operating system and click "Submit" to filter vista-compatible software.

No Rebel XT driver for Vista

Try changing the "communication" setting on the camera from "PC Computer" to "PTP"
Menu > Tools2 (wrench/hammer/2) Communication = Print/PTP

Downloading pictures

Yes, you need a driver so that your operating system understands how to interface to your camera. Canon Europe has a handy web page:

http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010192.asp

Enter your operating system and language, and you will get the choices of things that can be downloaded relevant to your camera. If you were using Windows Vista, for example, your choice would be "Canon Camera USB WIA Driver for Windows Vista". Install that, reboot, and then connect your camera again. It should be recognized by your computer.

Internal memory

To LanaJones123

I'm afraid the Canon Rebel does NOT have an internal memory for storing pictures. Any pictures taken without a card installed will be lost.
