I just bought a Craig cht923 sound bar for my mom for her birthday and I can not get any sound to come out from my TV or DVD player. The manual wasn't helpful.Am I missing something?

I suggest you use more than one disc for testing. I have a film on dvd that seems to work on all machines except mine. There is good video but no sound. Other discs are fine.

My friend had no audio from her new dvd player. The instructions didn't help but mindlessly (almost) pressing buttons from desperation suddenly revealed an extensive audio menu and after some trial and error good audio was suddenly apparent.

If it has a scart it would be a good idea to use it at least initially because if there is audio being output from the dvd player it should send it straight into the heart of the tv and switching is automatic.

Is third time a charm. Again several years ago I

Here is the owner's manual for your DVD machine. This is a VHS recorder but not a DVD recorder. To record VHS tapes to DVDs, you will need a DVD recorder.
You will plug the yellow video out connector on the VHS to the yellow 'Video in' connector on the DVD Recorder. Do the same for the red and white audio connections, out on the VHS, IN on the DVD Recorder. Connect your TV to the DVD recorder so you can see the picture you are recording.

I tried connecting HDMi cable from player to TV

You may have a defective HDMI cable. If you have a friend with a working cable you could test yours on their system.

Dvd does not play all types of dvd;s

In most cases burned DVD's are recorded in Divx format. Thus your dvd player must be divx compatible. Your friends dvd player probably is.
