All issues should be reported to Hitachi Customer Service at (800) 654-7013 and resolution requested. I am also trying to find out where this black line issue can be reported, such as a consumer group or goverment agency. This product should be recalled by the manufactuer!.
Had the same problem. Was quoted $800 to fix. Searched the internet for 6 months and found this thread on avforums.com http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=462873&highlight=black+line+on+plasma&page=4 Read through all the posts. Very simple fix, but you have to have some mechanical inclinations or you can cause more problems than you started with. I was up to 5 of the black lines, but decided to attempt the soldering these guys did and fixed it all for the cost of a soldering iron! Even if you decide not to attempt it, it gives you somewhere to start to tell a technician.
Dito! We have a 1.5" vertical solid black line running down the center of our screen. Does anyone out there know how to get rid of it?
Did you fix the black line? please let me know as my TV (same model) has the same problem.

I have the same issue with my 42" hitachi plasma. I took my tv to get repaired and the news was not good. It was the panel which means it would cost between $2,000-$4,000 to repair. Since so many people are having this issue, I truly believe this is a design flaw with Hitachi. My suggestion to everyone is to call Hitachi directly and express your disappointment with these tv's and that they should do something about this.
I have the same set with the same problem (inch wide black line) to the Right of center though it seems to last for an hour or so and then goes away. yet returns when the set is turned on after having been off for some time. If turned off and right back on again its okay. after going through the menu function, setup, picture, etc. decided i was powerless
ref: Model 42DET41. Same problem here with black vertical lines. My set was $2900 from hh gregg in 2004 and the problem started at 14 months, two months after the warranty ended. hh gregg could only chide me for not buying their extended warranty. Should a set like this only last 14 months? I have been dealing with Hitachi for several weeks now without a resolution. Where should these issues be reported to? All of our cases should be reported. Sounds like a common defect to me and a recall should be in order!
