Not detected by My Computer

The Maxtor drive shows up under "Disk drives" in the Device Manager and according to the status is working properly. However I cannot access the drive as it does not show up in My Computer. I have uninstalled and installed in device manager but it makes no difference. Habe also disabled/enabled but to no effect. Can anyone suggest a solution? Thank you

I have maxtor 3200 200gb, before it was working properly but suddenly the hard drive doesnt appear anymore in my computer. While it appears in disk management but need to be initialized, I try it by right clicking and select initialized disk but after the process, the status remained unchanged "Not initialized" and I cannot change either the drive letter assignment because the drive is unallocated, and no format option while doing right click on the drive.

Go into Control Panel go into 'Administrative Tools', double click 'Computer Management' click on 'Disk Management'. Do you see the hard drive?? Right click on the drive and select 'Format'. If this didn't help, write back and we'll find another way.

Not recognice by usb hard

A USB hard drive is a portable external storage device that works just like a conventional hard drive.

The device is simply plugged into a USB port on your computer as you would connect a flash drive.

Unlike a flash drive, however, a USB hard drive can store a much larger amount of data.

If your computer will not recognize your USB hard drive, you can try troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem.

Plug one end of the USB cable into the port on your hard drive and plug the other end into the USB port of your computer. Ensure that both ends of the cable are connected securely.

Open "My Computer" (Windows XP) or "Computer" (Windows Vista/7).

The USB device should be listed as "removable disk" once it is plugged into the computer.

If it is not listed among the available drives on your computer, proceed to the next step.

Ensure that the data cable is working properly.

Try another USB cable if you have one available.

Disconnect all other USB devices from the computer as they may interfere with the operating system detecting the external hard drive.

Reboot the computer if the USB hard drive is still not recognized.

Plug the USB cable into another USB port and check to see if the device is detected.

If you are using a USB hub, remove the device and plug the external hard drive directly into a USB port.

If the computer still fails to recognize the device, the external hard drive itself may be experiencing a hardware problem.

Check the status of the hard drive in the "Device Manager" window. Under Windows XP, right click "My Computer" and select "Device Manager."

For Windows Vista and Windows 7, click the "Windows" button in the lower left corner of the screen, then type "Computer Management" in the search bar and press "Enter."

Select "Device Manager" in the "Computer Management" window. In the Device Manager window, click the "+" sign that appears beside "Disk Drives."

If the external drive is not listed, click "Other Devices" in the Device Manager window and see if an "Unknown Device" appears.

The external hard drive may have been detected but the device is not working properly.

If it is still under warranty, take the device to the computer store where it was purchased to have it repaired or replaced.

Hope this helps

Windows vista does not see it

It should see it.

Try connecting it to a different computer, to see if the problem "follows" the Maxtor unit around.

Does it show up in "Device Manager" (under 'Disk Drives' and/or under 'USB devices') ???

Is it brand-new?

Is it "defective"?

Is it still under warranty?

Maxtor 200 gb external will not show up in my computer after numerous installs

For Vista you don't need any driver for this, it should recognize and install automatically.
Did you check the device manager to see if the disk is recognized in the device list?

Next step is to check the Disk Manager (right-click My Computer, select Manage and then select disk management), and see if the disk already has a partition and has been formatted. If not, then it will not show up in "My Computer" with a drive letter yet.

Some details on external hard disk troubleshooting might also help.

Maxtor external HDD not detected by Vista

try to format might need a quick format for you to use it. if still doesnt work check for the sata, pata cable that connects your motherboard.

HDD unable to detect at My Computer

Well first I would pull the hard drive out of the case. I would then get a USB to IDE/SATA drive cable. I would connect the drive not being able to be detected to another computer via USB.

If it works the drive is still good but the data might be corrupt. If the data is corrupt I would be sure to get any stuff you can off of it and basically reformat and reload.

My slave hard disk is not showing in my computer

Is it formatted ? Does it have a drive letter associated to it? If not then either format it (right click on My computer -> click Manage -> click Disk Management. Now right click the drive if it is showing there and either create partitions and/or format it if it not already formatted.

If it's already formatted, and you just need to assign a drive letter, then in Disk Management, right click the drive and click Change Drive Letter and Paths and assign an unused drive letter, say Z.

Close Computer Management and open My Computer. The new drive should show up now.

You might want to try downloading this fix from Microsoft., as your first line of attack.  The problem seems to be within your usb 2.0 hub on your computer.  See if this helps.

Maxtor personal storage 3200 200 GB hard-drive does not show up in my computer

The volume partition may be failing. So your machine can see the drive but you still cannot read or write to it. I would open it and extract the drive, to eliminate whether the drive and / or enclosure is at fault.

Hard drive problem

just right click on my computer go to manage and then go to stogae and then select disk managment it will show the list of hard drive connceted select your drive according to the size. format it and it will show you in my computer. bye
