This actually gives the wrong impression with regards to the XP life cycle. Microsoft will still be allowing OEMs like Dell to sell XP till the end of January 2008. Chances are very good they will continue issuing updates and patches for a year or two after that. XP is a good operating system and no user should be afraid to use it especially when considering Vista?s hardware requirements.
Sounds like you have an "illegal" copy. If you bought it from a legit source and have "proof" then you need to call Microsoft directly. You can not get licensing issues resolved over the internet to my knowledge. If you provide Microsoft with all the information and it is a "bootleged copy" they most likely will give you a major discount on purchasing a legit copy. Be aware that XP will not be supported next year.
Straight from the "horses mouth":
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean19
Windows XP SP1 and SP1a support ends on October 10, 2006
BUT NOT SP2 which will end 2 years after Vista release and that may be extended per article in ZDnet.

Note yr 2009
But all this doesn't solve Sandipan's problem. And true I used the wrong words in my original statement. Sorry if I misled anyone.
