My Dell 4500 with Windows XP Pro is astoundingly slow, so decided to start fresh, reload XP Pro, drivers, software, etc. I have original Windows disc that came with computer. When I put it in and reboot computer, a screen says "press any key to boot from CD", but I want to wipe out the hard drive and reinstall the OS, but I can't get there. Tried to enter start up with "del" as it reboots, nothing happens, so I tried F1, F2, Ctrl, space, no luck getting into start up. Should I just get a new hard drive and really start fresh?

ok i had to do this with my mothers computer, when you delete a partition, you have to make a new one in its place, i say put in the xp cd, then say to create a whole new windows installation, when it asks you to choose a partition, delete all partitions, then make a new one, your choice to size but keep it enough to at least install windows onto it, then after that just reformat that partition and install windows, that should fix it.
If your HDD will not recognized during installation you need to check if your HDD is detected. Try to look at your BIOS if it is detected. IF the HDD will not detected you need to replace the cable, try to use the other slot of your SATA or IDE ports.
The problem is the driver for the sata hard drive. You would need to get that from the dell site and put it on a floppy disk, then at the start of the windows install select to install that driver. I ended up just installing the rc version of windows 7 and it worked out fine.
i) i would suggest you to format ur system or reload OS or reload OS Freshly(dont mess with crashed system)
ii) then try load sound drivers from the mother board CD that came with ur computer which will have video drivers, sound drivers, network drivers......
The laptop won’t POST after removing the memory? Sounds like the memory module (s) need to be reseated again. Removing memory will not reset the laptop. If you want to install a clean Windows XP load, you need to boot from the Windows CD and format the hard drive. Fell free to contact me if you need futher assistance.
