Last night, while watching a movie on our 3.5 yr old 51MP392H/17 Magnavox, we noticed that the picture in the lower left corner and upper right corner was getting yellow. This was true in High Def as well as "normal" t.v. mode. Tried the Convergence, manual convergence & even the old "restore factory settings". The red convergence is perfectly alligned, but the blue (it won't let me adjust the green?) while very sharp & centered in the center of the screen, but at the upper right and lower left, the blue and green +'s were way out of allignment, and even tilted. We attempted to adjust manually, but while I could get them to move left to right, I couldn't get them to move up or down. The problem seems to be getting worse each time the t.v. is turned on (and of course, being Friday the 13th....). We can't afford the $100+ for someone to come look at it, and my husband is very knowledgable about some electronics (and I can rebuild computers) - is there a fix / test we can do to a) figure out what's wrong and b) hopefully fix it ourselves without having to sell one of our children into slavery?

Re: Blue Convergence just went out?
High Voltage Capacitor? Leave the set unplugged for 1/2 hour most components will selfdischarge, as for your problem, being a Magnavox, you have one of two problems, the convergence I suspect is what is blown out, this unit probably uses STK392-110 Ic's, I would suggest replacing with STK394-160e chips as they are probably shorted, some of the big resistors (1 or 2) may be opened up also, usually they change color. The only other thing that would cause usually a yellow color in the corners is the CRT Fluid, it changes from clear to Orange in color and clamps off the blue color from the fringes, I suspect the chips need replacement, dont forget to put some heatsink dope behind them, they are usually on the left in the front of the set (from the back) Big long heatsink that is fairly tall (probably the biggest heatsink in the set.) Good luck, and the repair usually runs around $350.

No.Should cost u like $300-350 for parts and labors.Get it fixed any local tv shops can fixed this problems, very common problems for DLP CRTS tubs design projection tvs Tv have a problems known as a convergence problems,it is dead. The tv convergence board it is dead, that why ur tv picture colors lines R,G,B mis alignments, have pictures colors shadow or 3D pictures look alike. The tv convergence board must have it parts replace like 2 STK convergence ICS and some or all of it resistors to fixed the convergence board to solved convergence pictures problems.
Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. It still can be repaired.
Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section. Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence. You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight. If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem. Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix Reply
You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a technician or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from TvRepairKits.com Their kits include a step by step instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc. Thanks! hope you rate my response
You will need the original remote to perform a convergence touch up on Magnavox TV sets. If you are using the original remote - but still can't get it working - go back to the site where you purchased the tv repair kit and ask for their help
The convergence amps have most likely failed. This is the number one leading cause for the symptom your describing and the most common failure on that unit. Your Tv take two STK392-120 Sanyo Ics for convergence amps, located at Ic7404 and Ic7405 on the board and mounted to a rather large aluminum heat sink. In addition you will most likely have to replace R3159 and R3160 (6.8 ohm 1w) resistors and test the remaining low ohm resistors for change in value. A shop would really be earning their money on this particular unit if they charged $400 - $500 for the repair. It is an extremely difficult set to work on and there are a number of little problems that can reach-out and bite when attempting the repair.
