Kenmore Canister Vac, Progressive, 25512 255513 model. Brush won't turn. One end of the brush roller, end closest to belt, is off center which is keeping it from turning freely. The end cap is like a square. Other ends turns fine. Do these end caps come off? If so how? Can't get it to budge. This is exactly what is keep brush roller from turning.

There should be 4-5 screws on the bottom of the brush assembly, remove them and you will see the brush and belt, remove each end of the brush assembly they should lift up and out of the housing, and either replace or reailine the belt on the motor side of the housing.
Probably either bearings in the roller brush, a damaged fan blade, or the bearings in the motor. Take the roller brush off completely, and run the VAC without it. If it's much more silent, then the problem is with the bearings in the roller brush. If it's still noisy, then look closely at the fan that produces the suction, if you can. If you see any damaged blades, then you'll have to replace it. If it seems fine, then it's most likely bearings in the main motor that will have to be replaced. The bearings and the fan blade are NOT expensive parts, but the labor at a shop to change the main bearings would be kinda pricey.
Check the brush end bearings for debris build-up and sticking bearings--remove the brush assembly, and pull off the bearing blocks. Clean the pin ends on the brush and the interiors of the bearing blocks with Q-tips, then lightly oil (3-in-one or similar) the bearing blocks and pin ends. Reassemble the brush into the sweeper head without the belt on--check for free turning of the brush. If ok, install the belt, and check for operation. Hope this helps!
Take the time to check to see if the belt that drives the brush is operating correctly.
I would also see if the brush itself is frozen up and unable to move.
You need to remove the brush in order to change the belt.
It would be a good time to clean the brush of all debris and add some WD40 to the plastic tabs at the end of the brush. Add the WD40 and turn the tabs around the brush to make sure the turn freely.
Reassemble with a new belt.
If you find this solution to be beneficial, a Thumbs Up rating from you would be appreciated.

I
have a whispertone vacuum, different model #, but maybe instructions
will be the same. Turns out I didn't need a new belt, just clean out
the crud and reset overload protector. The instructions in the manual
tell you to remove the light cover and bulb first. To do this, press in
and lift both sides. Push in and turn bulb counterclockwise to remove.
(you need to do this because the next step involves turning the unit
over). This takes you to
Step 2. Unscrew the cover screws ( on either side of bulb).
Step 3. Turn unit over. To remove cover, insert screwdriver at cover tabs on both sides and twist to release tabs.
Step. 4 Turn unit right side up. Press handle release pedal and lower
the swivel. Tilt cover forward from back until front snaps free.
Step 5. Carefully insert and twist screwdriver at each brush support to free brush from base.
Step 6. Remove worn belt.
Step 7. Slide brush supports off to check and clean brush support areas.
To replace belt: slide washers and brush supports onto brush assembly.
Install new belt over motor drive, then over brush sprocket.
Snap brush supports into place on base. Be sure brush supports are not upside down.
Line up front of cover and base. Rest cover on front edge of base. Tilt
cover to back. Press cover firmly until side tabs snap into place.
Replace cover screws, light bulb and light cover.

The roller does not turn. The motor still runs alright.
Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. It sounds to me that you have a broken belt or a bad brushroll and either one should be replaced. If the belt is a flat belt, then the belt change is every 4 to 6 months and the extra belt stored in a Ziploc bag in the refrigerator. If it is a geared belt then you would change it every year or so depending on wear and how much it stretched. Also the brushroll should spin freely and check for no thread or hair buildup on the ends and on the brushroll itself. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/home_10153_12605 National Customer Relations1-800-549-4505 Home Services & Repairs1-800-4-MY-HOME 1-800-469-4663 Parts Orders & Inquires1-800-366-PART 1-800-366-7278 Thanks,Don – The Vac Man Go Ahead.Use Us.
Check the brush roll ends, make sure they turn freely, if not then replace it. The belt may look ok, but they stretch after a short time and should be replaced.
