Sounds like you may need to reinstall your usb driver sets.also, reinstalling windows completely wouldn't hurt as well.. If the Zen came with any software, i suggest you reinstall that after your fresh installation of windows. that should fix the problem. total reinstallations can be tough but, its always better to do this when your input ports stop working. hope that helps.
HP will give you a password if you can prove ownership of the computer. They have a form that you need to fill out, sign, and have someone else sign, and you fax back to them. I don't remember how they get back in touch with you, but it says on the form.
I've done this before on a laptop I bought off E-Bay.
Now, to the USB problem -
1) Based on all that you have done so far, your really going to need to get inot the BIOS and see if everything looks OK there.
2) You've indicated that the mouse works OK, but nothing else. I am going to be suspect that there is something wrong with the basic USB drivers that loading Zen may have caused. Turn system restore off, totally uninstall anything related to USB, and reboot. Even uninstall the Zen software and any other software that uses USB.
Reboot, and allow the computer load only those things that you know are OK. Once everything loads and the computer is doing nothing, go to Device Manager and fix all flags that may be listed.
Make sure all is OK and your happy with the state of the computer at that point, then turn on System Restore.
Then start installing new software, checking the computers operation thoroughly before shutting down and rebooting and adding the next step of software.
3) I might warn you, you might want to do a hard scan on your computer after that first reboot. Use Adaware, Spybot, and any of the other free online scanners to make certain your computer is clean. Be sure to empty the Recycle Bin before rebooting and turning System Scan back on.
Let me know of any issues that you may have after doing this. The solution is going to be a systematic approach of a specific plan of steps. Not any one thing is going to jump out of the air and be the magic cure to fix this.
And one last note -
Have you gone to the HP website and made sure you have downloaded and installed the latest drivers for the machine, as well as check to see if there any software updates that should be applied to the machine.
And are you running the most up to date install of Vista?
You could have a corrupted windows file. Insert your windows cd and click on the repair option.
Restore don't always work. Its good to have, but over time windows will get corrupted. Do you know anyone that has a window cd of the same that you need? Also check to see if there is still a black spacer guide in the usb ports, they some time break off if you switch usb componets alot. The black guide is in the middle and keeps the prongs of the usb straight and seperated.

Load optimal defaults bios settigns.
also uninstall all usb drivers form system then install again.
Hello,
Not sure if you've solved this problem. If you're willing, I believe this solution will help fix the issue. Please follow these instructions-->
Go into the control panel
Click on the system icon
Select the Hardware tab
Open the Device Manager
Scroll down near the bottom of the hardware catagories and find USB Devices
Click on the + sign in front to expand the listing to show all the USB devices
Right click on and uninstall every device in the USB listing
Reboot the PC and it will reinstall all the USB devices
This will clear out any information in the registry that it has stored about you player (or any other USB devices you have ever attached to the PC)
Now plug the player back in and it should make a fresh reinstall of the device's drivers.
Let me know if this helps or you any questions.
Thanks,
Raph30
Try this, I hope it works
Go into the bios, and enable high speed usb, it will be the last bios page more than likelly. There also may be "enable legacy USB" enable them both and see if the work then.
As mentioned a reinstalation is in order. Reinstall vista or xp, if you don't have the vista disk, there isn't much left you can do. If you put xp pro in, it will more than likelly run faster than it did when it was working. There comes a time you know the rest.
If you are going to have to spend big bucks, you may want to look at this first, it gaurantees sucess or you pay nothing, this is for un fixable problems where files were deleted, and we aren't equipped to do remote repairs yet, That's something that we may do at a future time, but these guys do, http://www.reimage.com/home/, give it a look, they claim to be able to fix any OS, as long as you can get online. They can even get you online if your machine is really messed up, so it's not like I'm hurting us by giving you the website, if you are going to spend two hundred on an OS, you may want to look at this for a third the price.

Have you had any trouble connecting to a computer with vista other then this computer? have you connected any other usb devices to the usb and do they work? Once I have more information I can give you a more definite answer.
Thanks,
Lee
This is why you never want to just click on things that you don't know what they do. You really didnt need to make your usb faster and this may be a virus. I would highly recommend you reformat and reinstall windows. You should have a restore disk or something similar for your laptop. If you need further assistance let me know. also please take a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly.
Thanks,
lee
have you reformatted or done a clean install of vista?

I had one of these and it did the same thing. I could not get it to work right again... switched to an Ipod and all is great since.
Its problem with your usb ports if u have warranty go to service with your laptop
Turn on your pc and have everything start and get to your desktop now unplug the cord while this is all on with notebook open pull the battery pack out and wait for comp to completly stop pop bettery back in and when you boot the menu should come up that says start in 3 different mode hope this helps
Hello and welcome to FixYa!,
It sounds like if the USB Ports are not working for any type of Inserted Media, --It is the USB Ports that are broken!
If not then on the Creative webpage there should be a Driver for your MP3 Player
Hope this Helps, --P3NGYJ03
Set the Start value in the following registry key to 4:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor
When you do so, the USB storage device does not work when the user connects the device to the computer.
To set the Start value, follow these
steps:1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate, and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor
4. In the right pane, double-click Start.
5. In the Value data box, type 4, click Hexadecimal (if it is not already
selected), and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.
You do not need to go to bios, if Bios was OK before, it will be OK now, as settings had not been changed.
Try the following:
Welcome to Fixya! I just Checked the Creative Website. If you go under the Support Tab and Identify your Player, They have Updated Drivers there. Download an Updated Driver and Install on your PC. This should allow you to Connect with the Player Via USB.
Hi,
goto BIOS settings while computer startup and change it to system default settings.
It might fix.
If there's no USB device being recognized by that computer a big chance of USB failure here , the USB of that computer is bad and cannot be repair by doping a system, restore or driver update since its already a hardware problem....
The usb ports are faulty or the usb connections attached on the mainboard of the notebook are loosened ,otherwise it wont be the problem for all the devices and all the ports.
Hi there
System restore probably won't work and you'll be left with the same result. Restart the machine and enter the bios ( F2 ) on boot, have a look to make sure all the USB controllers in the bios are enabled.
Once you are satisfied that the controllers are enabled boot into windows in normal mode and try a USB device again, if still no joy open "device manager" and uninstall all the USB drivers.
Reboot the machine and let it pick the USB's up by itself and install them.
Hopefully your problem will be resolved
Good luck
1. Log in as an administrator (if you are not already logged in that way).
2. Go to Start, Run and type "regedit" (without the quotes).
3. When the registry editor starts, navigate to the following location in
the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum
4. Right-click the Enum hive and select Permissions.
5. In the permissions dialog, add the Everyone group.
6. Give the Everyone group Read access.
Close the registry editor and connect the device.
You have a couple things you can do.
First is to go into CONTROL PANEL, find your DEVICE MANGER and click on it. Then scroll down until you see the +USB and expand it by pressing on the + sign. Now click and open one at a time and make sure the USB is ENABLED. After checking that they are all enabled, the click UPDATE DRIVER.
I believe they were probably disabled .
Now if you still by chance this didn't change anything or everything was ok, My next suggestion would do a system restore from your control panel options. (the system restore, brings your computer back to the state it was in before it had an error)
One of these WILL WORK
you can get into your registry and bios by going to search on your start menu, type regedit and enter.
To get usb to recognize you devices, you need to download a program called "UNRECOGNIZED DEVICE INSTALLER"
try rolling back your usb drivers or do a system restore to go back to before you had the problem. you may also try updating the usb in device manager and see what it say's .
also One way to check USB is to use the Registry editor that comes with Embedded Visual C++ (or a
suitable registry editor on the Windows itself) to check for the registry settings (Tools >
Remote Registry Editor). With ActiveSync running, connect to your device then look at the registry
setting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\LoadClients
The device does not have a device driver:
When a device driver for a device is not available, Device Manager displays the device as Unknown Device and puts it in the Other devices
branch. This is very common with universal serial bus (USB) and
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) 1394
composite devices. Also, a status of Error Code 1 or Error Code 10 may be displayed when you view the properties of the device in Device Manager.
Note
Most USB and IEEE 1394 devices function correctly without additional
device drivers because they are configured by the drivers that are
included with Windows for these bus types. However, an additional
device driver is needed if the device does not fit the defined and
supplied Windows class drivers. If the bus cannot identify the device,
it interprets the device as a composite device and then reports it as
such in Device Manager.
A list of the devices that are installed on your computer that may have a problem is displayed in the details pane, as follows:
View the Setupapi.log fileThe Device column lists the common name for the device, or the name of the device driver associated with it.
The PNP Device ID
column lists device IDs, such as Peripheral Component Interconnect
(PCI) ID, ISA ID, an ID for some other bus type, or an unknown type. The Error Code column lists
the error code associated with this specific problem. Frequently, the
Device Manager error code helps determine what created the unknown
device. For example, if your computer generates a "Bad or missing
device driver" error message, three types of entries may be listed
under Problem Devices, depending on the device type:PCI PnP Device ID:
Device Name | PCI\VEN_00000&DEV_0000&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_00\0&0000 | Error code ISA PnP ID:
Device Name | ?\PNP0000\0Bad or Incompatible Device Driver:
Device Name | ROOT\UNKNOWN\0000
If
the device has a meaningful name, use the information in the
Setupapi.log file to determine the cause of an unknown device. By
default, the Setupapi.log file is located in the %SystemRoot% folder.
You can UNblock the installation of device drivers that do not contain a
digital signature. Use this approach when you want to prevent any
deliberate attempts to destabilize the computer. To do this, follow
these steps:Click Start, click Run, type control sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
Click the Hardware tab.
Under Drivers, click Driver Signing, and then click UNBlock - install unsigned driver software.
Click OK two times.
The File Signature Verification tool lists all the unsigned
drivers that are installed on your computer. It creates a Sigverif.txt
log that is located in the %SystemRoot% folder. Use any text editor
(for example, Notepad) to view the file. To use the File Signature
Verification tool to display a list of drivers that are not digitally
signed, follow these steps:Click Start, click Run, type sigverif, and then click OK.
Click Advanced, click the Search tab, and then click Look for other files that are not digitally signed.
Click to select the Include subfolders check box, and then click Browse.
Locate and select the %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers folder, click OK two times, and then click Start.
Review the list, and then contact the driver manufacturer for
information about how to obtain an updated driver that is digitally
signed.
USB devices that are based on earlier versions of the USB
specification may create ghost devices that appear when the device is
connected, and then disappear when the device is disconnected. Also,
the device may work fine, but may create a disassociated unknown
device. This is typically caused by firmware that is either outdated or
configured incorrectly. In this case, contact the device manufacturer
for updated firmware.
A ghosted device can appear if you manually install a driver
for a Plug and Play device that the computer has already detected and
installed. You can resolve this issue by deleting the ghosted device.
Visit the manufacturers web site if
you don't have the driver CD for your system, and do NOT use hardware
drivers from Windows Update!
remove all the "Unknown Devices" on my system,
the ones that you dont see in the Device Manager unless
you tell it to show the hidden devices
If you need info on
How to Find Device ID's to Resolve Unknown Device Problems
http://www.gilsmethod.com/how_to_resolve...
go to this site and download the program, it will find your ports and allow you to adjust settings, change drivers, be able to hide/show items and more.
http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html
are the devices turned on BEFORE they are plugged in usb?
Do you have drivers for that particular device?
are the drivers all updated?
do you have a usb driver file in your registry root_kit?
YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO REINSTALL EVERY USB DRIVER OR CHECK IN DEVICE MANAGER TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE ALL UPDATED.
ALSO WHAT I RECOMMEND TO UNINSTALL ALL OF THE CREATIVE ZEN. ALSO UNINSTALL CREATIVE ZEN IN YOUR PROGRAM FILES.
AFTER THAT, REINSTALL IT AND CLICK NO WHEN ASKED TO MAKE USB FILE TRANSFER FASTER.
SOMEHOW THE PROGRAM CHANGED EITHER YOUR USB MEMORY PATH OR FOLDER SETTINGS.
HAVE YOU RAN A REGISTRY CLEANER? I USE GLARY UTILITES. IT'S FREE AND IT CLEANS, OPTIMIZES, CHECK SYSTEM ERRORS, REMOVES SPYWARE, INCREASES FREE MEMORY AND MORE.
You would have to have the installation disc to install the drivers. That's a bummer. You could always upgrade to vista ultimate.
