I have a Mitsubishi 60" rear projection TV (1995). It has sound and when I turn it on I can see the entire picture for a few seconds then it has a black square right in the middle. If I touch any buttons, the whole picture comes back on, but again, only for a few seconds. I can see the picture about 3" all around the square. Can any one tell me what it could be?

You can likely buy a replacement remote here:
Remotes.com
'Universal' remotes exist only in your dreams; there is no such thing since the manufacturers cannot agree on a basic code set that would work with any set.
None of them can control every function of every brand and model made.
Sounds like you have the TV in the "close caption " mode (text), turn off. 2. Check batteries and the mode the remote is in; eg TV, VCR, Cable & ect. Good Luck, big IRISH.
That model will usually leak coolant directly onto the vertical output area and that will put the tubes into protective blanking and you will have sound but no picture.
I checked out past posts on your forum and found the answer there. The TV is working great. I did have a bit of trouble finding the cc in the menu, but finally found it and the problem was solved by turning the cc off. Now I just have to make sure that they don't turn it back on!
He, he. Somebody activated the subtitle mode on the remote. Desactivate the CC mode on your menu and it'll go away or at least if you want CC put it in CC1 Text1
I have seen this before, and I can only describe it as a flaking of the phosphorus coating in one of the picture tubes. If you can, remove the back such that you can take a flashlight and look down into the 3 picture tubes. If you see any flaking or dark spots in the phosphor, there will be a spot on the screen missing that color. Unfortunately, this is not repairable, as all 3 tubes would need to be replaced (like replacing all 4 car tires when one is completely bald) and that would cost more than a new TV.
