SECOND TIME I HAD TO POST THIS THERES BEEN NO RESPONSE
Check battery compartment. Clean the terminals in the bottom with an eraser on the end of a pencil. Make sure the compartment door is a firm closure- press it closed to ensure contact. Of course the batteries have to be up to scratch and of the correct specification Still in trouble? have contacted the Olympus Tech Support Team? If it of recent purchase send it back to vendor. Do not go for the repair route - those prices are not commercial at all- better the new camera.

As I stated before there's never been anything liquid or damaging in the battery compartment.
It closes firmly.
Neither the battery that came with the camera originally, nor the new one which is same brand, type, etc work- despite both being fully charged.
I could not contact customer support- eveyr time I entered my info on the website, it said one of the fields had an illegal character. They didn't say which or what it was but none should have appeared as such.
Our cell phones are on the fritz and we couldn't call.
We bought this on clearance back in 2005, and come to think of it, we never recieved the rebate though all the forms were correctly filled out and it was mailed with a computer printed envelope, complete with bar code.
Shame since this camera was the best choice we had then, and still is now- when camera shopping for my mother, we got a Kodak EasyShare and it's horrible quality, not good enough for small details on collectibles. I'd like to get the same camera as a replacement but I'm afraid it'll do the same thing, again without provocation.
Thanks anyways but I guess I'm SOL.
