I have a zenith tv with no remote how do i change the channels on it

You have the closed-captioning turned on and set to "text" mode. It's easy to do on Zeniths because many of their remotes have on button just to control the captioning. Go to the caption settings and turn it off or set it to "caption" mode if you want to use it. Then the box will be gone.

(What's happening is that in text mode, the screen is blanked out in the area where the text would go, but there isn't any text being sent by the station. On channels where no captioning at all is used, the box never shows up.)

First , be sure you have the proper remote , check and replace batteries , re program remote by holding tv button untill all lights flash.. stop and let it re program ....this should solve problem ...

Manually turn on the device( TV.,VCR,etc) to be controlled.
Press and hold the CODE SEARCH button until the red indicator stays on,then release the code search button.
Press and quicly release the desired mode button(TV,VCR,etc).The red indicator blinks off once.
Press the CHaNNEL UP button repeteadly(up to 300 times) until the device to be controlled Changes Channel.The red indicator blinks off with each button press.If you overshoot the code required,press Channel Down button to backtrack through the library until the device changes channel.
Press and release MUTE to install the code.

I doubt the TV even has a tuner if it is designed for a hotel. It may be a "dumb" receiver, nothing else. Do to channel 2 and then press the down arrow for channel, does it flip to 138 or AV1?

most zeniths change just the channel up or down takes if off video/aux. Its usually below channel 2. otherwise need remote

Alot of Zeniths have menu for that, have you tried to press the channel up button?
