Question about Toshiba 42H83 42" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television
I have a 6 year old Toshiba 42H82 RPTV. It served us well with good picture quality. However, two days ago, when we turned it on, we saw a very bright picture for a few seconds, then a "poof" and then the screen went blank. We still have sound and the TV reacts to the remote (e.g. mute, different channels). I unplugged it over night hoping for a (software) reset but this wasn't it. I understand it's difficult to diagnose this with a simple email message but maybe sombody out there can give me an idea on typical repair costs for these sets and if it would be foolish to invest in a TV that's already 6 years old. For whatever it's worth, I do have access to the 42H82 service manual and a reasonably well equipped electronics shop in case somebody has a (repair) suggestions. Thanks for your help.
Does anyone or can anyone give me instructions for replacing CRT fuse?
thanks

I have the same tv but the picture is being squished down a bit, maybe 20% down the screen. black bar across just the top, and the color is off any suggestions?

It sounds like the 200v supply to the crt's is missing. this is the source for driving the tubes, other than the high voltage generated by the flyback transformer. If the set got really bright gray with wome white lines that are kinda on a diagonal, this is generally the cause. the source for this voltage is a diode on the secondary of the flyback transformer.

That was it. The fuse for the main board which powers the CRTs was broken. I replaced it and the picture came back. Thanks for your advice.
I have the same problem no picture but everything else works I was wondering where you find that fuse for the crt's.
We were watching the TV, heard a "pop" noise and the screen went black. I have no picture at all.
My screen had been turing bright on a few occasions with green lines going across the screen so I turned the tv off and on againg and the problem disappeared. Finally the last time it occured the screen went blank and the reseting didn't work. DO you have a solution?
How do I replace the fuse for the CRT's on the main board?
