Ps2 keeps shutting off

There are quite a few things that can cause a disc read error on the slim PS2. The most frequent is a bad laser, however, here is some useful troubleshooting info:

1. "Lid Closed Sensors" There are two "lid closed sensors" in the slim PS2. In a fall, it's possible that one or both have become damaged. Remove the top of the PS2 and try depressing both sensors with a game inside. The laser should move up and down at least???

IF YES, try again with the lid on... if the laser doesn't move when you close the lid, then the top casing of your PS2 cracked in the fall and is no longer depressing the lid closed sensors.

IF NO, you have a bad lid closed sensor -- these are not really replaceable easily -- you may be better off replacing the whole PS2 if one or both of these lid closed sensors goes bad.

1. CLEAN THE LASER. ALWAYS DO THIS FIRST. MOST TIMES THIS IS ALL YOU NEED TO GET YOUR SYSTEM BACK RUNNING A 100% AGAIN

2. IF THE LASER CLEANING DON'T WORK ON YOUR PS2 SYSTEM PERFORMANCE THEN TRY ADJUSTING THE LASER VOTAGE.

3. IF THE LASER VOTAGE DON'T WORK YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE LASER

Hi this is the commonist fault on all ps2 and even ps3 their is no way of repairing the laser itself the only option you have is to replace the laser unit the problem with doing this is that if you buy a new laser you will need to get it calibrated and to do this you will need oscilscope and these cost about £300 or if in us about $600 so thats the problem of buying new ones its often cheaper to buy new ps2 than go down that route.
The other option is buying second hand ps2 of an auction site but the problem with this also is that it might have same problem as yours.
What i did that made mine work for few months extra was to use ask.com and type in :Disk read error on ps2

On doing this i came across a site but i cant remember what it was called but this site showed you step by step instruction on how to adjust the laser slightly so that it played games again after following these instructions mine worked again for about three months.
It basically told you to remove the case off the ps2 then where the laser is its like a black plate but you cant see the laser remove this black case i think their was about two little black screw on the top of the black lid covering the laser it covers the disk so you cant see the disk with case removed.
Anyway remove this black lid then if you look at the back of the laser tray not at front where the game goes in but towards the back their is a white disk about the size of a coin now this site told me to first mark with marker the white disk so you know where you started from put line on the white disk then on something else but not the disk so you know where it was located before you turn it doing this lets you go back to how it was before you moved it.
After doing this if you turn the disk slightly it raises and lowers the laser lense now you need to do this a bit at a time and then but the black lid back on with screws then try a game in it you can hold the black lid ontop of the laser unit if you want but dont push to hard and dont hold it to soft else game wont spin properly.
Just turn this white disk a bit at a time then try loading a game keep doing this you can turn it either way if your lucky you might find that adjusting the laser hight might get it working again if not then the laser needs replacing but remember if it dont work then you need to turn the whit disk back to where it started from ie where you marked because if you replace the laser this white disk needs to be back where it was originally.
If you are going to do this search the net first you should find the complete instructions on doing this ok also make sure you dont shine the laser in your eyes or other peoples eyes as its dangerous and can blind you in the future so make sure the case is on the laser before its switched on.

the games are fine it is the system. it needs a cleaning. if it trys to read it it needs to be cleaned. if it trys to read it and it says error/ cannot read then the laser needs to be adjusted. if it just does not do anything, you need your laser replaced. send it in to a game system repair center. connie
