H10 System Files Missing

Sorry I know many similar questions have been posted but the solutions are just to... blah. So one day the player randomly stopped my music to give me a message saying "System files missing" (I wonder how that happened) So I did as it said and went to the website. I decided to use their customer help chat thing and installed the firmware updater. Now it said to connect the H10 to the computer in UMS mode which I did. Player says USB Connected yay. But the firmware updater shows no response whatsoever. I decide to check out My Computer. gasp Amazingly it didn't show up as a drive. My H10 shows that it's connected and my computer shows that it's connected too... but only as a mass storage device. After ripping my hair out, I need to find out how to install drivers or I don't know just help me please >

Sounds like a failing drive. From My Computer, right click on the drive and do a format before reinstalling the software on it. Choose full format, not quick. You WILL lose all your data that you had on it.

Can you check in the BIOS for a setting like "Allow Configuration Reset" ?
When you enable this, reboot without the H10 in, then plug it in when your machine is up.
Check in Device Manager for any problems with your USB ports.
Unplug any other USB devices you don't need for now, it may be a power problem too.
Try them and let me know what you find.

It says files missing need h10 recovery tool

Hello,

When the H10 comes up with the information "files missing", system files are missing on the player for proper functionality.
The recovery tool must be run to restore the player's functions.

When not having the tool available on disk it can be downloaded from
the iRiver site, starting here:
http://www.iriver.com/flash/index.asp?code=0302
In the second column next to GO, enter the word recovery in the bar.

Click on the upgrader, to see how to perform the recovery for the MTP version of this type of player.
MTP version indicates that the firmware on the player is suited for transferring media using Windows Media Player 10 or 11.

The version depends also on the region, the player has been sold. More info for checking the MTP or MSC version, see:
http://www.iriver.com/flash/popup/flash_pop.asp?board=faq&code=365

I need system files for my iRiver H10 20GB MP3 player

hard drive is probably bad -- common problem. cheapest solution is tobuy as-is h10 from ebay with a working hard drive (perhaps it has atouchpad problem), open the unit up and replace the drive.

See this forum for info on how to open the player with a torx tool and a plastic pry unit. forum

Planb - sell unit on ebay in as-is condition and use money toward a topnotch 20gb refurb unit for about $30-50 from sellers like metromania

iRiver H10 - Missing System Files
You must be connected to the internet for this to work: 1.Download the MTP Firm Updater Utility from iriver website - iriverinc.com/support (Audio Jukebox --> H10) 2. Unzip file, run .exe file, go thorugh wizard (if you are not in mass storage mode, it will give you instructions on the wizard on how to change this) 3. Select Recovery 4. Finish going through wizard 5. disconnect iRiver from computer, and wait for it to update - your player should be good.
If the problem happens again, then uninstall Windows Media Player 11 from your computer and rollback to Windows Media Player 10 (you will NOT lose any songs by doing so).
Good luck!
